Lime Street Station turntable
Hi everyone,
I am a new member on this great forum,
I am trying to find some photographs of the turntable that was in Lime Street Station, any time between 1920's untill the end of the steam era,
I have been told that over the years there was possibly 4 turntables
can anyone please help me,

peter , i know an ex LMS past fireman (driver ) who worked the triangle
at edge hill i will find out about the turntable , upto now he remembers
only 2...... there may have been 4 over the life time of lime st .....

I suppose they MIGHT have been for Express trains headed away from Riverside Station?? But didn't they switch locomotives (and tenders) at Edge Hill anyway?
There was turntables at Lime Street at the top of Platform 9, also, because of the limited space, part of the stone wall was carved out in order to accommodate the turning engines.

Found this layout map for Lime St showing clearly the 2 big turntables at the top of platform 9 (11 really) and the 2 smaller ones to the left of platform 1. I cannot remember where I found this so cannot accredit it unfortunately.

Interesting, thanks for posting that. The smaller turntables would obviously be for turning individual wagons only.

Puzzling as to why anyone would even care about turning wagons.
Perhaps for turning tank engines that were used for shunting purposes?
I travelled in and out of Lime Street in the 1950s and 1960s. I only remember the turntable on the far right as you exit the station by train as the only one in actual use. If I recall correctly is was powered by attaching a steam pipe from the engine to the turntable, so it could only turn engines in steam and not any cold engines brought by a shunter.
there was actually 2 turntables at Lime street. the first was in the boiler room area, where the drivers now sign on, under the area of the gladstone hotel, the later was in the area where the signal box is now.
visitors to the Liverpool model railway show in 2008 http://www.lmrs.org.uk/exhibition/index.htm will be able to see a full scale model railway of Lime street in the 1940s which is currently under construction, here is pics of the turntable at Lime street and of the model

and in the 1950s, this pic is a screengrab of a dvd showing the prototype deltic diesel leaving lime street in 1955 showing the turntable behind it with a british railways standard class 4 locomotive on the table

Thats an amazing model. Can't wait to see it finished.
The Bullring is great but wait until you see the Great North Western Hotel and the Station itself, saw it last year still in its primitive stage.

This place is a minefield of info I never knew was there to go asking about!
it still wont be completley finished all though there will be more progress than is in them pics and there will be trains running.
but the more the merrier who come, and pass the word round please guys

ps, edit to what i said above, the standard 4 steam engine is not actually on the table but on the siding next to it
