Hi quincyg
I love seeing the close-ups of these date stones that most of us only see from street level and are unable to discern the detail. Very fine work, quincy! Thanks! :handclap:

Not sure who Mr Lindop was. Photographed at Smithdown Place end of Smithdown Rd
On Smithdown Place, Wavertree otherwise known as Penny Lane Corner. Charles Berrington came to live as a poor carter and left as an extremely wealthy man mainly the result of property development.
Thanks Taffy :)

Nelson Street.
There's a story behind that 1887 date, which first appeared a couple of years ago when a new roof was put on the building.
Joseph Sharples has proved that the building was built about 1857, as a factory.
Langdon's, who made tents, etc., took the building over about 1887, but the front is still as it was in the 1850s.
Europleasure took over Langdons in the 1980s and closed the building a few years later.

Anybody know why there are 2 dates on the clock tower of Liverpool Uni
the building is down in books as being built in 1887 but what does 1837 signify. I only noticed this while enlarging a part of a photo.
Hanover Street:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3218/...a317e6a5_o.jpg
1837 to 1887 is the 50th Anniversary of Victoria's reign.
The building took place between 1889 and 1892.
(Source: Joseph Sharples).
The "Annals of Liverpool" confirm it opened in 1892.
Victoria Buildings, Victoria College, The University, Brownlow Hill.
Opened 17 December 1892. Architect: Alfred Waterhouse.

Don`t follow this signpost for New Brighton
Thanks, Philip. This should be a good warning that a year on a building may not be when the structure was built but because someone sought to commemorate something, in this case the Silver Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Another example being the date on the gates of 'Park Lodge'..."AD 1207" commemorating the founding of Liverpool in that year and the establishment of the hunting lodge for Toxteth Park. The park was begun by King John although the lodge wasn't necessarily built in that year. Following photo by Kev as posted by him earlier in this thread. Thanks, Kev!

Also beware if a building says "Established ****", as this will most certainly refer to when the Institution or Firm (or whatever) was first created, probably in completely different premises.
A single date - like most of the above - is usually the building's date.
Isn't 50 a Golden anniversary?
Good point, Philip, about any sign that says "Established...."
Looks like you're right in terms of 50th wedding anniversaries being called golden anniversaries.
Actually I am a bit confused because there were coins issued in 1887 for Victoria's "Silver Jubilee" but that would have been her 50th year, whereas the current monarch celebrated hers in 1977, on 25 years. The year of Queen Victoria's Silver Jubilee seems to be variously stated:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...ver+Jubilee%22
sounds odd. they are called jubilee whatever the prefix. Silver jubliee, Golden jubliee, Diamond jubilee.
some may think of jubliee meaning silver (25) as it's the one they hear about most often.
