As a kid all around me in Liverpool 8 was Victorian. Then the 1960s wipe out of the Victorian part. Then they were demolished and the 1980s bungalows came. These may go soon and another phase. I have seen 3 Liverpool 8s so far and maybe a 4th. All in one person lifetime. What district in the world has been rebuilt 3 or 4 times in such a short time?
The public money over 50 years that has been poured into the area is scandalous. Money poured down the drain. Each time the working class occupants destroy their own environment.
It would have been much, much cheaper to have given them houses to own and then it is up to them after. Well they sort of in the Council House sell offs. The flats never were taken into account.

becomes a Venice without canals, just another city, no
longer of special interest to anyone, least of all the

A similar thing happened with the 'Queens rd estate' Breck rd.
It has changed 3 times in my life time. It was originally Victorian houses which were swept away to make way for a new estate, the design based on a Swedish village (Ha!!) - - the 'Swedish village' quickly became neglected and run down, and gaining a bad reputation with anti-social behavior. (like the 'Cornish village' which was built over on Everton rd side .. you have to smile at the ideas they come up with !! Cornish fishing village . ha,ha ) Next, in recent years, the estate had a make-over and is presently looking ok.
Why though, has money been spent on refurbishing some areas - not once, but 2 and 3 times - and yet others are totally overlooked and left to rot -ie, Oakfield rd,Townsend lane areas of Anfield - two important main roads and yet left to crumble.
The Radcliffe estate was another piece of land that has changed 3 times in my lifetime up till now. Originally lined with buildings similar to those on Shaw Street, Westbourne and Eastbourne street swept and winded uphill from behind shaw street park at Village street - my auntie lived in Radcliffe street. All demolished to make way for a new estate modelled on a cornish village - trouble was it was a rat run for thieves and car robbers escaping the police who knew the mazes only too well. A hazard for fire engines getting in to any emergency too as it was all pedestrianised. It must have been one of the shortest lived estates ever built. The area is now covered with the 'new' type red brick boxes that we are so prevalent from the mid 1980s.
We just don't know how to build, or manage, social housing. The places are not policed, in many ways, and offender not prosecuted. When they do get them to court the naive judges (from private school backgrounds) let them off.
The great thing about this government is the anti-social laws it introduced. Now we need social lessons in schools to nip it at the bud, and create a socially aware generation.
