Glad I seem to have reunited 3 ex Sunbeamers. I often go on your webby Gnomie - great Old Swan pics, I wasn't in a flat but I had to wait outside for (luckily) - all of 5 mins until some kind soul who lived there was convinced I wasn't trying to get in there to burgle or anything. It's from the staircase, but obviously encased in glass which doesn't give the very best results. It was 8pm by the way. Philip, I didn't know I was standing on the site of the new Regent , is this the only case of a replacement building not outlasting the original. So many replies to answer - thank you all. I didn't know it would cause such a response when I done a uey (ok - U turn) on Prescot road when I thought on.

Great views there Ged!
To be honest, I always thought that block was a office block...it has that look about it if you see what I mean.
Strangely...I ended up going to Old Swan three days in a row last week...I seem to be attracted to it atm!

Apologies for the durge in updates!
Glad to oblige Mart. I see you've noticed there was a better comparison pic, No.2 pic instead of No.1. Glad you posted the original in case peeps were wondering what we were on about.
.
Hiya Gnasher.
Did your know the Driscoll family, I think the names were Anita, Susan, cannot remember the others, they lived next door to the Davies' cannot remember the number but think it was 50? The daughter was Carol Davies and think the mum was Brenda but again, all a long time ago, the memory is not what it used to be, god I sound ancient!!!
Probably yes, because it was built next door to the original, which was practically unheard of.
Usually newer cinemas replaced older ones on the same ste (for example, the Gaumonts in Anfield, Bootle and Dingle, and the Majestic).
The New Regent was built on the site of the Highfield Lodges (mentioned by Martin), and a clause was put on the old Regent that it was never used as a cinema again (it was only 12 years old).
The old Regent eventually became a car showroom called Casino Car Sales.
Great info as ever Philip
Just been looking at your pics, brilliant of the Stanley abattoir (think that is how it is spelt), I used to work in a roofing company on the opposite side of the road, next to the small midland bank and opposite the stanly pub, used to play pool in there and had some great work do's there, is it still open? on the pictures it looked derelict. I remember the foul smell on a Thursday from the abattoir, we had to keep the windows closed. Happy days!!!
Carole work is goung on at the Stanley now, not sure if it will be a pub again? its been closed for a few years now. my mate Pat ran it for a while.
The last time I went in there Gnomie must have been back around early 80´s, I remember you used to order your dinner and they would come across the road to where I worked with it, it was great.
Guys, is the college being refurbed or has it closed down?
It's closed, due to be demolished. Martin
Thankyou, Martin. Wow, that'll certainly change the look of Broadgreen Road. Do you know whats to be built there? (Please don't be a carpark)
