Thanks, Philip. This should be a good warning that a year on a building may not be when the structure was built but because someone sought to commemorate something, in this case the Silver Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Another example being the date on the gates of 'Park Lodge'..."AD 1207" commemorating the founding of Liverpool in that year and the establishment of the hunting lodge for Toxteth Park. The park was begun by King John although the lodge wasn't necessarily built in that year. Following photo by Kev as posted by him earlier in this thread. Thanks, Kev!

Also beware if a building says "Established ****", as this will most certainly refer to when the Institution or Firm (or whatever) was first created, probably in completely different premises.
A single date - like most of the above - is usually the building's date.
Isn't 50 a Golden anniversary?

Good point, Philip, about any sign that says "Established...."
Looks like you're right in terms of 50th wedding anniversaries being called golden anniversaries.
Actually I am a bit confused because there were coins issued in 1887 for Victoria's "Silver Jubilee" but that would have been her 50th year, whereas the current monarch celebrated hers in 1977, on 25 years. The year of Queen Victoria's Silver Jubilee seems to be variously stated:

sounds odd. they are called jubilee whatever the prefix. Silver jubliee, Golden jubliee, Diamond jubilee.
some may think of jubliee meaning silver (25) as it's the one they hear about most often.

Re: University/College, Brownlow Hill
I messed my earlier post up. Anyway, there are two information stones on the Brownlow Hill side.
One says University College opened 1892. The other states...the Engineering Laboratories were erected "in the Jubilee year 1887"
I'll transcribe them when I get time.

This building was once the church school. Now it's the St John's church hall
Stone laid by Mrs Joseph Rawlinson. The Rawlinson family had extensive saw mill interests in Garston
Rather nice Arts and Crafts design for the church hall sign. Hall in Dundonald Rd, Aigburth.
