Those festivals are in the areas those people live. We don't have an Irish quarter.
If there is an Irish quarter and they want to have a Chicago Irish St. Patrick's Day parade then let them - they organise it as the Chinese do. We don't have an Irish quarter and city should not organise an Irish festival either. But seriously why shouldn't there be an Irish festival? No one is saying that the Irish are the predominant ethnic background of all Scousers but there is every reason to celebrate Irish culture and remember the tragic elelments of it.
Commemorating the famine is a very different thing indeed.
If you want Irish history go to Dublin - they will tell you. The famine and the city's role in it, yes of course - but no Irish parades. that is for the Irish to do. And as we don't have many I don't see it happening.Afterall there is a slavery museum at the Albert Dock, I would like to see a museum on Scotland road about Irish history.
If the city has a day for the Irish we should have one for the Welsh too.

see waterways is talking out of his arse again. Someone should tell that son of a b**** about Irish and Liverpool history. I for one will not talk to that BIGOT again.
And the James Larkin Republican Flute Band.

I know Liverpool history too well and we are NOT predominantly of Irish origin. BTW, my background is English, Welsh, Scots and Irish. Why a focus on Irish when the English and Welsh outnumbered them?
It appears many here are annally retentive in Irishness. And look up the word bigot!

And (not sure what year established) St Michael's Irish Centre.
We are Irish.
Me 75% right through my history. so why cant me and thousands like me have a memorial to our ancestors that had to work the lowest jobs. had to live in the poorest areas, had to fight to survive, but survive they did. this alone should be celebrated here.
Waterways you wrote " If you want Irish history go to Dublin - they will tell you. The famine and the city's role in it, yes of course - but no Irish parades. that is for the Irish to do. And as we don't have many I don't see it happening. If the city has a day for the Irish we should have one for the Welsh too. "
First how do we not have many Irish, they are everywhere, and over 50% of english living here descend from Irish.
There is more to Ireland than just Dublin. my family live in Dublin now. my ancestors are from Dublin, Roscommon, Galway, Clare and Cork.
no need to go rto Dublin for Irish history, lots of it here, just no recognised.
I dont see it happening either, as this city seems ashamed of what is a major influx of Irish in its history.
Yes i agree one for the Welsh too, they are a big part. maybe the walkway along the river could hold statues to all nations who settled here? but will it happen, No chance.
I also think you will find that a lot more Irish settled here than Welsh. the Welsh are a big part, but serious not on the scale of the Irish.
I think the links to the Liverpool Irish Festival, Institute of Irish Studies, James Larkin Republican Flute Band, St Michael's Irish Centre, etc. demonstrate that the Irish are acknowledged in Liverpool. However, for Waterways, there is a website for the Welsh in Liverpool here.
