Thanks for the pics Taffy! I remember that old building well, many years ago we used to learn weightlifting and boxing there, and I'd have loved to be able to visit again.

I wasn't taffy, sorry. Here's a couple of Garston pics from today (30th September 2007)

I used to buy me pets from here, Cauldfield's Pets (spelling?)

    From The Echo today:

PEOPLE living and working in Garston are being given a chance to have their say on a major public art project for 2008.

Artist Michael Trainor will launch his plans for the Artistic Republic of Garston and the Garston Embassy with a garden party at Wellington Street school today between 2pm and 7pm.

The event will be a chance for local people to learn more about proposals for the Embassy, which will be one of three specially commissioned Pavilions funded by Liverpool Culture Company and managed by the Liverpool Biennial, as part of next year’s Capital of Culture celebrations.

Further Pavilions will also appear in Kensington and Kirkdale – each with their own unique identity – staging a wide programme of exciting work throughout the year.

Michael Trainor’s idea for the Garston Pavilion has been inspired by Garston Cultural Village Campaign’s ambition to regenerate the area through cultural activity.

Michael is recommending that Garston becomes an ‘independent state’ throughout 2008, creating the Artistic Republic of Garston.

Wellington Street school will become the Republic’s Embassy and will act as the cultural centre for the town.

Along with the necessary trimmings of a civic building such as a fountain, a balcony of waving dignitaries and an entrance feature, the Republic will also have a newly commissioned flag, national anthem and a state car used to transport visitors to and from Liverpool city centre.

Alex Corina, artistic director of Garston Cultural Village, said: “Garston will be at the heart of the Capital of Culture Celebrations in 2008. There are a lot of talented and creative people in our community. We have to give young people the belief that they have a future in Garston.”

As well as hearing more about the plans for the Garston Embassy, visitors to today’s event can also take a special World Tour of Garston on a 1965 open top bus and enjoy a live performance by CPC Music jazz band.

    Default Republic of Garston

Here's a few shots from today. It was a fascinating event and well worth attending. The open top bus tour around Garston was the highlight of my day.

Superb Taffy, I was working all afternoon unfortunately. I hear there's a bit of a Shindig at The Welly tonite?

Anyway, the attached pic reminds me of when we used to play within the buildings grounds. Our footy pitch can be seen marked out, me and Paul, They were the days

The new building where the Garston Hotel used to stand doen't exactly blend in with the rest of St. Mary's Road.

    Nice update though, Kev.
