I disagree that it's the no smoking ban because as was said, pubs have been closing down for the last few years. I was in London Road on sat watching the match and then in the Liverpool, James st yesterday afternoon - all were chocker. I think the city centre will continue to thrive, particularly at weekends and especially with tourists (not just overseas) but locals tend to be closing down. Having taken quite a few pub photos lately, i'm not surprised though at some of them closing, you can get as many as 5 or 6 in one small area and surely they can't all be sustained, some have had a history of closing and re-opening (the green man, the crown (kirkdale rd), The Cunard - and many more change hands frequently.

Yes, I would think that the town pubs are still doing ok.

As for the local ones, do you think it's because people are buying cheap booze and drinking it at home ? I know loads of people who just don't bother going out anymore. They either have a drink in the house, or they wait until they are on holiday before they bother with bars.

Yes Lindy, I also know plenty who'd rather have you round to theirs for a few scoops with you repaying the compliment the week after. Even my daughters and their friends now have a sit off until heading into town for 11pm to midnight, what with that bladdy Sunrise serving til 6am (but they reckon they spend most of the time having a giggle and a dance)

I heard something on the radio about 'staying in' being the new going out!
ha, (for the younger ones I mean )

It's now supposed to be cool to stay in.

I don't think the smoking ban will have a a major impact on pubs' takings in the long term. People will always want to go out. It may take a bit of getting used to, but I think after a while things will return pretty much to the way they were before.

It's bingo that is experiencing a major problem as players go outside for a cigarette during the intervals between sessions. It is during the interval that a bingo club will make money from parti games or table-top bingo. This has in the past accounted for somewhere in the region of 50% of a club's revenue. A hell of a lot to lose overnight.

Does anyone ahve any information about / photographs of The Jester. Was it a Tetley's pub?

On the hill at the junction of Scotland Road and Gt. Homer Street.

    Default Wavertree

    Hi posters
I've never been to Liverpool, but my grandad was born in Wavertree and his family lived around that area at the end of 19th century.
I plan to visit Wavertree this November and want to visit Smithdown Road, Toxteth Cemetery, Lark Lane, Holmes St., Holy Trinity Church, Christ Church, Bickerton St., Cantsfield St., Aigburth, Sefton Park, Greenhill Rd. and Allerton Rd. to take some photos and have a couple of pints in pubs where my ancestors probably did too.
However, from the photos I've seen here of the boarded up and burnt out pubs in that area, some of these places seem to be run down, rough areas these days.
Maybe I'm mistaken, but I don't want to be mugged by hoodies whilst walking around like a tourist.
Any comments or suggestions from people who know these places would be appreciated.
    Rob in Mexico
