I might suggest that if the big curved window got broken, it would have been difficult to replace the glass. Filling in the big window also gives you a more prominent way to advertise the establishment. However, there might be another major reason why the big curved window had to go. Look at the windows to either side of the big window, and note that they are of different design compared to the original windows. Although I don't know for sure, it's possible that instead of the lofty upper rooms that were in the building originally, an extra floor was added by reducing the height of the ceilings. Perhaps someone who is in the know could confirm this.

Maaybe it did get smashed at some time or other? in which case its quite expensive to replace a large curved glass pane and whoever owned the pub at the time? decide to take the whole casement out and vricked up? the windows opening.
In Northumberland terrace when I wus a lad, there was a Tobacconist, sweet shop that just looked as though it just came out of a Dickens era,the glass was like that of the pub ie it had two curved windows eitherside of the doorway.
Aye, George. I am assuming that as time went on it would have been considerably harder to find a glazier to replace custom-made curved glass like that. All very well for the artisans of a century ago but not as possible in our more modern times, not to mention the cost of it today.

The two shops are PRS Electronics and Health food store on Dale street.
Okay, thanks, George. I don't know the particular windows but I do know such curved windows still exist.

Passed the Gardners Arms on Edge Land Drive yesterday and notice it has closed.
I think the Red Rum bar may have closed. It looked boarded up when I passed the other day. That won't look very good on Grand National Race day will it !

I wouldn't give Satan a snowball's chance in hell against a woman's ego, man. He'd rule the Earth for a day. A week later we'd see Satan out cuttin' the lawn.
