MY RELATIVES AT WAR

Site dedicated to my families service and sacrifice during the two world wars. Also contains information on my ancestral history.

After seeing your site about your grandad, I was inspired to look for stuff on my great grandad who died in the WW1. I knew that his name was on the War Memorial at Port Sunlight so have got a picture of that. I also had a look for the grave using the British Legion site. Found a picture of the grave in France, and have got that. Had a look in the National Archives and found his medal card, and now have a copy of that too. I don't have any old family pictures, other than one of my great grandmother, who died in 1949.

So thanks Spike - some of my family history is known for future generations.

I wonder if many families can relate to the following which happened to my father at the outbreak of the war in 1939.
Dad was over 35 yrs old when war broke out and, by then had five children.
That put him out of the range of conscription which was introduced at the outbreak..
Also he worked in the food industry (another 'excused' industry, as well as
being a member of the A.F.S. (Auxilliary Fire Service) when he was off shift from his normal job which required 3 x shift working.
One day, in the post, he received an envelope containing a white feather.
This, apparantly virtually accused him of cowardice!
That day he immediately went to the Royal Navy recruitment office and joined the Royal Navy.
He served on minesweepers from 1940 until demob in 1945 during which time three of his vessels were torpedoded or hit mines on the Russian Convoy runs.
He was awarded 'oak leaves' having been mention in despatches for bravery under fire and I still have a letter sent to him by one of his Skippers,who had spotted the Award in the 'Gazette'
Dad always suspected someone he knew, who had sent the anonymous letter and, strangely enough, that 'gentleman' never served in the Services, claiming bad health!
From his exposure in the North Sea following those sinkings, Dad suffered from Bronchial Pneumonia throughout the rest of his life but not once did I ever hear him complain.
I'd be proud to be just half the man he was.

hi Spike
I started to tidy up my family tree & start chasing my Howard's up & down Prescot Rd

I googled Orlando Platt ,son of Jane Ann Howard & Edward Platt & the search took me to your site

it turns out Orlando is my 1st cousin 3 times removed ...I still can't work out all the removed stuff!!!

I had checked your site looking for Howards but not for him ,so thank you for all your hard work & the moral of the story is check your site first
right I'm off to hunt a few more Howards

not really TBH I didn't realise that Orlando was part of my family .....I had him down as just a lodger with my 3x gt grandparents at first it was only while tiding up my tree to send to my auntie who I haven't seen for over 30 years that I looked again

I think some of my Howard's must have gone to St Anne's school though as my grandfather was born in Ronald St & his Parents were married at Stanley St Annes

Notice the WILLIAM H PLATT as well.

I have found no records for William. He could be related to Orlando as the census does return a William as brother to Orlando?

thank you Spike ,that was the page that I landed on when I googled Orlando...I wish all my relatives had unusual names it would be so much easiler to find them
could I use your photo in my family tree on my PC not online ?
