Remember it well....Early 60's,coming out of some factory in Kirkdale,big hair,contained by a scarf,with flatties,and mens socks,pretty fearsome looking,I thought, at the time!!
The women were more high matenence back then in my opinion , my mum took hour and hours to get ready , i used to have to sit in the hairdressers with her , surrounded by toxic fumes and ciggie smoke .. By the time they were ready some of the hairsyles resembled Mozart ! And the size of the false eyelashes .
My mother went to the salon every Saturday afternoon too. She never wore rollers outside though and would have killed me if I did.
I got false lashes and wore them for three days and never again! Too much trouble to put on and I was 'aware' of them the whole time. I just used more mascara,

Well, the way we do it in the movies..for beautiful full hair is: You put the hair up with Heated rollers.. Then, in about 15 minutes or less.. walla!! Full hair.. Or use a curling iron..wrap the hair..Then take the iron off, and pin the curl in place till it cools.. You can use the velcro rollers after the heated if you want, while putting on the makeup, and then it cools and you take out.. Use a light hair spray and it will stay...
Every salon I know of, and some nice ones ....have hair dryers.. Some rotate around the head to dry the hair..ha ha ha... Anyway, still don't need to parade around in rollers.. I don't care what they say.. You time your hair curling for the time you will be going out.. Not all day long till cocktail time.. Just plain ATTENTION is calling..

My mum still to this day won't leave the house unless her hair is perfect. She wouldn't be seen dead in rollers outside of the house tho' She is never seen without her smart clothes, and she wears her bit of makeup and jewellry everyday. re false eyelashes: The first pic of me in the 'Yo fashion statements' thread - you can see me wearing false eyelashesI loved them and often wore them right thru the decades with all the different fashions.
They can be quite comfy and ok to wear when you get used to them and put them on correctly.
I remember when we used to smear eyelash glue along our eye lids and stick glitter on !!
These were the days before they invented glitter eyeliner ! We looked fab but boy was it hard and scratchy to remove !! OMG, it's wonder we had any eyelids left !!

Thats what i had done , the hairdresser washed and blowed my hair into place , my hair is long so the rollers had to stay put for a couple of hours while i had my bath and applied my make up ! Thus i hd to leave the hairdressers with them in my hair ..
I understand about how they do it in the movies , but they have whole dressing rooms and trailers , and an army of make up and hair techs , we dont have that privalge .
But when the girls in Liverpool have finished getting ready , they would put any hollywood actress to shame ..
Also the whole going out in rollers was started by Collen Rooney , wife of footballer Wayne Rooney , she was photographed coming out of a salon in Liverpool wearing a head full of curlers , the young ones were quick to copy this , it's a sort of 'street' syle in Liverpool right now , it may not be to everyone's liking but it's the way it is .

re hairdressing: Just an aside - but young, up and coming hairdressers training up, have never done a perm - or can't do perms as they've no experience of them. There is no call for them now - or at least very little call for them .. hardly anyone having perms these days. Some of the older generation - the pensioners who still want them - say they it's getting harder to find a hairdresser who does perms.
It's all cuts and colours now. I can't imagine perming ever coming back.
I have a curling iron so quick and easy, takes a few minutes. Don't need to pin curls as it is more for body as my hair is ultra straight .
I would never perm mine again, chemicals destroy your hair. But back then in the late 70's or whenever it was it was 'in' After 3 perms to keep my 'fro' up I never did it again
