You have got me going on this now.
Although I grew up around that area it is all a bit vague to me now, but I have been trying to piece it together.
Looking at those pics, the church referred to as St Polycarps and still standing today, the only one I can see on Bing maps is on the corner of Conway Street, which is a long way from Adelaide Street.
Also looking at another pic, the view up Gordon Street, the flats appear to be on a much higher level than Netherfield Road, and behind a few of rows other dwellings, so it looks odd that the church is right behind them when they came down.
Is the road between the Cygnet pub and the flats supposed to be Northumberland Terrace, isn?t that were the flats were on?
Also the road markings do not seem apt for the area I am thinking of.
Where about does John Bagots hospital fit around this, wasn't this somewhere behind the flats?
Something does look familiar about it though.
As I said, time has dimmed my brain so forgive me if I am talking rubbish.
Fantastic site Ged, it has robbed me of many hours of my time.
Anyway, this is me on my bike in Abbey Street, Grays the chemist at the top on Heyworth Street. Not sure when the street map is dated as it doesn't show any of the high rises.
Pete.
