The Lyceum, that was the flea pit that showed Xrated movies that we adolescent boys tried to get in to see, "Bitter Rice" with Anna Magnani and other foriegn films that were so rated. They were not like the semi porn that is on offer today but they were thought to be hot stuff then. On Saturday mornings the Lyceum was packed to the rafters, not like the posh Odeons or ABC's,there was no cinema club, just good old fashioned serials ,Flash Gordon,The Mystery Riders,Don Winslow USMC, Johnny MackBrown, we sat rapt as those old pre war films flickered on the screen. If a film was rubbish the kids booed and barracked ,and sometimes threw a bottle at the screen, which was full of patches. I actually saw a Tizer bottle hurled at it one matinee. It flickered and flashed in the projectors beam and went through the screen with a plop.We had to watch the rest of the show with a big black hole in the top corner of the screen. A big cheer went up as it went through ,must have been a bad movie.
Hi Brian D,
Yes great memories of Heathy And Springwood in the forties our
headmaster was Pop Little and he used to take all the sports, especialy
swimming which I was best at,he used to take us to the Mather Ave,
Police baths and when walking back to school, he would stop outside the
shops, and say those with dinner money can fall out. There was a mad
dash into Blackledges for a twopence three farthing crusty viener loaf, then
into Costigans for a slice of marg which they had already cut up into thin
slices even though it was rationed, and into Haswells for stickylice then we
would walk back to school pulling the centre out for the birds so that we
could drop marg to the bottom and squeeze it all the way back up to the
top, and eat it on the way back. In the forties there was know chippy
I'm sorry to say,I left Heathy in 1947.
Cheer's,
Tippo.
PS. was the plane still
in the corner of the field.
QUOTE=brian daley;163464]Haswells,the sweetshop that stood at the corner of Heath Road and Mather Avenue, twas there in the '50's that Reggie Owen,Billy Dawber,Joey Lewis and me would get our chocolate cigars to augment our vienna loaves stuffed with hot chips and retire to the grass verge beneath the trees that led up to Woolton. Under the boughs we would talk of of sailing ships, sealing wax and cabbages and kings. Haswells was our sweet heaven, and many a boy from Gilmour Heath Road Secondary Modern chose to spend his dinner money there than in the purchase of a ticket for a school dinner. A shilling in those long ago days. I had forgotten the name of that wonderful shop until I saw that posting tonight.

Hi Tippo! You must be near the same age as myself! I too left Gilmour Heath Rd in 1946, but the Headmaster then was 'Peg Leg' Simpson. I still have my leaving certificate signed by him, My class teacher was a Mr Corrin, 'Big Fella' and used to wield a mean cricket bat! on the field of course! And the old Bi-Plane was long gone way back in the 50s I believe, don't know where it went to.
The original owner of Heswells (Mr Heswell of course!) was a conservative councilor on the Liverpool City Council in those days. "So long ago"! so many memories! Cheers

Re Bi-Plane in Heath Rd School grounds: Does anyone know what make it was??
Tippo,
You are right about the chippy - there wasn't one on Heath Road until the
80s sometime - think it was the wool shop that became a Chinese. The nearest chippy before that was at the shops near the cenotaph, at the end of Long Lane - close to South Liverpool's ground.
Kevin
Hi Norm,
Correct it was Simmo at Heathy, pop Little was the head at Springy.
Corrin was one of the teachers Dyson, Bleasey bill, my teacher Killer Miller,
along with Leonard Toft. who also coached me in swimming.
Staiton, or as named Satin. Brown woodwork, Butcher woodwork,
Miss Greyham Art, Miss Bruce, Joe Gibson, Ermson the caretaker.
Norm was there a chap called Wingy in the training school with
and a George who married one of best looking girls in "Bear Brand"
one of the Storton girls, they and their mother got killed in the Stockport
air crash disaster.
And was Clarence Bunting one of your teachers in the old KB dept later to
become room FF4.
Cheer's,
Tippo.
PS,
I think Dyson, used to play for Lanc's,

Hi Norm,
Not certain but I think the Hodges took over the Black Horse
sometime after my G/father left, and Jim was married to Joan Quick
herself a Woolton girl and they lived in Widnes until Jim died
somethink like 5/6yrs ago not sure if is wife Joan is still alive.
FF 2. was Alec Heuwin a red headed chap in charge at that time.
Letty Edwards was the boss needle plier in room two, did you play
footbal up the woods in the dinner hour.
Cheer's,
Tippo.

Hi Tippo, Thanks for the info, sorry to hear about Jimmy! he , and another chap, (who operated the same machine as Jimmy, different shift) were both at my wedding reception at the church hall next to the 'Rose of Mossley' in Rose lane, way back in 1956. and yes, Alec Heuwin was the superviser in Rm 2. As for the 'footy' no, I remember we only had a half hour for lunch! do'nt forget, we were on piece work! so had to keep those machine's going!! Brian D,s comments re the teachers was interesting, I was in Cyprus, and the Suez Canal Zone in the early fifties, doing National Service!!! I wish some of those teachers were with me over there!!!! Cheers
