The Lyceum, that was the flea pit that showed Xrated movies that we adolescent boys tried to get in to see, "Bitter Rice" with Anna Magnani and other foriegn films that were so rated. They were not like the semi porn that is on offer today but they were thought to be hot stuff then. On Saturday mornings the Lyceum was packed to the rafters, not like the posh Odeons or ABC's,there was no cinema club, just good old fashioned serials ,Flash Gordon,The Mystery Riders,Don Winslow USMC, Johnny MackBrown, we sat rapt as those old pre war films flickered on the screen. If a film was rubbish the kids booed and barracked ,and sometimes threw a bottle at the screen, which was full of patches. I actually saw a Tizer bottle hurled at it one matinee. It flickered and flashed in the projectors beam and went through the screen with a plop.We had to watch the rest of the show with a big black hole in the top corner of the screen. A big cheer went up as it went through ,must have been a bad movie.
