The Air Raid Shelter in Holly Street / The Wash House in Clare Street

Hi everyone. I think Ged maybe the best person for this (and I apologise in advance Ged, I mentioned the site to my Dad tonight and he give me a list of places for me to try and find!).

My Dad wanted to see if there is pictures of the old air raid shelter in Holly Street, which was situated by the back of the tenaments. He also mentioned the Wash House in Clare (or Claire??) Street.

I have had a look on Ged's site but I was struggling to find anything. I got the Chippy he was looking for (Gianelli's) and he was made up with that.

If anyone can help it would be very much appreciated.

Next pic is of the landing side of the tennies with the side of Gaskell's produce firm in the background, the near property is the Myrtle public house (as Myrtle view was the little side crack off Christian Street) This pic should be on my 'other tenements' page of my site.

The last pic is of Christ Church school, Christian Street (later, St. Annes) which stood facing Gianelli's chippy until demolition in the 60s.

If you look at my mini biog on my sites homepage, you will see the Clare Street wash-house chimney behind the library which was next to the Pontack pub.

The first pic here is Holly Street itself showing the back of the tennies. On the left side of the street looking up is the mock tudor 1914 style dwellings similar to those still in existance in Eldon Grove. We lived in 39 middle/bottom. The tennies hail from the 1920s and were demolished in the late 60s.

Edit: Personally, I don't have any recollection of an air raid shelter there but maybe it was demolished by then. I'm wondering if there may have been one in the 'backie' which was the square formed by the 1914 flats as these fronted onto Holly Street (as seen on the pic) then went around the corner into Christian Street, up Birkett Street and completed the square by coming along St. Anne Street to meet Holly Street again. The flats on St. Anne Street had shops below them.

This is some air raid shelters being built in the back field being built between
Reading Street and Lambeth Road in 1942. We also had them built in the street itself. Each family was issued with keys to them. I don`t know if they
would have saved people as they were only 2 bricks wide with a 4 inch concrete roof. Before they were knocked down we used them as playgrounds. We would jump off them with unfurled umbrellas or a sack tied
around our shoulders after watching Flash Gordon on the pictures
