Default Help with historic postcards of The Calderstones

    Hi,

I'm in the middle of writing a short article about The Cadlerstones and during the course of my research I keep coming across postcard images of the stones from the early part of the 20th century. The stones used to be arranged in a circle inside what is a traffic island on Calderstones Road today and the postcards I've seen online and in some of the books show them surrounded by railings. I'd love to be able to use some of the images in the piece I'm working on (as they're clearly out of copyright) but, with the Central Library being closed at the minute, I haven't been able to track any originals. I don't suppose anyone here has any high res scans of historic images of the Calderstones? It would be fantastic if you could help me out.

    Cheers.

    Hello researchwriter

Your best bet might be the Liverpool Record Office. The Liverpool Museums website shows one of the photographs of the Calderstones when they were in the railed enclosure, and they credit the Liverpool Record Office for the image. Good luck.

    All the best

Thanks Chris. Problem is, there are a lot of dead links for the Records Office at the moment because of the Library work that's going on, but I think I've tracked don the right email down.

There are some great images at http://www.mersey-gateway.org which are all said to be at the Records Office so fingers crossed.

You can make an appointment to visit the archive by Sandhills Station, John - I assume that's where they have the photos at the moment. And don't forget that chapter in Creatures of the Pool...

Ha! Thanks Ramsey. I haven't forgotten, don't you worry.

Can't seem to get any joy from emailing the Rec Office so will try the more direct and human approach of ringing them.
