I dont know how you prioritise one group over another, but what I do know is that there ARE alot of Irish people living in Liverpool, including members of my own family, and some very close friends with Irish ancestory.
Waterways was being very racist and bigoted towards the Irish and their music and as a member of this forum I have the right reply.

the Irish are still rocking :PDT_Piratz_26:
Problems with racists is that they dont or cant see where they are being racist.

Waterways I thought I was bad but you take the P***.
If people of Irish descent want to celebrate Irish culture what is the problem?
Gnomie never said they were the only ethnic group in Merseyside and he has said if other groups wish to celebrate their identitites he has no problem with that.
Your vehemence against the Irish seems to have a sectarian air about reminiscent of Orange order protests against any Catholic or Irish event.
Waterways, such comments can be extremely hurtful. A member of my family danced in Riverdance with Michael Flatley and took Irish music all over the world. Again, a member of Molly's family won the all Ireland Irish dancing championship. No mean achievement and she has medals by the score but is not ostentacious with them.
I myself have played Irish music on mandolin, banjo and guitar in many country's and I can assure you that while it may not :- be yer cuppa tea
It's far from being Diddly Dee
I have the tape made in Radio City music hall New York with Michael Flatley, I also have the one with Colin Dunne this is the one I prefer. To those who don't know, neither one are Irish, Flatley is American of Irish dscent and Dunne is from Birmingham of Irish descent.
i just thought i would share this with you. i was born in liverpool,(i live in north wales) i have manx, irish, mancs, jewish, and carlisle blood in me and i am proud of every last little drop running through my veins. and i thank every one of my family and ancestors for making me what i am today.

Wait 'til Kev comes in and sees this lot - the length of this debate I mean ! Ha! :D
Good dancers, though. :PDT11
I hope we can simmer down on this thread and all be friends.
I think Gnomie brings up an excellent point that the history of the Irish immigrants to Liverpool is not being given the mention in the current festivities it merits. I hope something can be done. Possibly by making sure that the contributions of Liverpool Irish like Kitty Wilkinson and 'Dandy' Pat Byrne are remembered is the way to help spread the word about the role of the Irish in Liverpool. Glad to see also that Ged is helping Ron Formby gather photographs for the Irish Festival as he reported a few days ago:
Of course it can be argued that "official Liverpool" is not doing enough to celebrate the role of the Irish in Liverpool's heritage, and that's probably so. But it might be said, conceivably, about a number of the groups that make up Liverpool, isn't that so?
Chris
I guess we have to be a little careful as those claiming Irish heritage are often derided as 'Plastic Paddys'.
Proud of my Irish (and other) heritage, but don't make a song and dance about it.

I must admit, I am quite surprised by a few of the stated statistics on here ....
When I arrived in Liverpool (15ish years ago) I was greeted by many an Irish accent, and St Paddy's day here was like nowhere else in the UK.
That, coupled with a few of the (non statistical) books I have read a bit of about the history of Liverpool lead me to believe that the Irish contingent was quite large.
I've no reason to doubt the substantial contribution of other groups (the many Welsh built properties around where I live are significant evidence) ..... however, in the last 15 years I have accumulated several Irish friends, live next door to an Irishman and managed to meet a grand total of 0 Welsh people.
This isn't to deny any past contributions from others - purely my experiences to date, and possibly why I believed the Liverpool/Irish link was stronger than suggested by some (naming no names, Burnsey) on here.
sorry to hear that Steven.
One of my friends, living in Buenos Aires provincia, I have been in contact with since 1980.
The other friend who lives in Rosario, has been to UK and stayed in L'pool on for 6 months a few years ago.
You know, like all wars, it's the powers that be that instigate the conflict, and oftentimes the ordinary man in the street has no pesonal grudge against the 'enemy'
When we had the Falklands conflict, never once did my Argentinian friends say a bad word about the British ( well not to my face any way !! ) :ninja:
.. and I never said a bad word to them about their countrymen either. My friends told me that, at the time there was no anti-British feeling among the ordinary Argentinian families.
We continued our friendship and we went on corresponding as though our countries were not at war.
My Argentinian friends love Liverpool in particular, and at one point it was arranged for two groups of school kids - one group from Buenos aires - the other from Liverpool - to communicate. The kids were made up.
So You see there isn't always an 'anti ' feeling between ordinary folk.
it makes you realise what a shame it is when war is foisted upon us.
ps,
funny thing is - on one of my first holidays in southern Spain we got talking to a couple who were on the same coach trip as us, and guess what - they turned out to be from Bs As. ( There must be something about me and Argentina) :) :)
Self appointed Hitman Steven steps in at this stage to calm this thread down.
Don't forget, I am ex- SBS !

I like the way Max is so laid back.
I blame RINGO STARR !! I am a utopian :PDT_Aliboronz_24: who was it who said 'The Irish should forget their history, and the English should remember it!' Just read a battalion of Irish fought for Franco in the Spanish Civil War, the Blue Shirts. In Kung Fu once Master Po said 'If you live in the past, you rob the future' :PDT_Aliboronz_24: Make love not war
God, Im scared to go on this thread but Phil Redmond recently attended the Irish Centre which is now at St Michaels Church Hall on West Derby Road a couple of weeks ago. (the local priest allowed the Irish Community to use it after the Wellington Rooms Irish Centre closed) Phil opened a room dedicated to Irish Literature and History. This Centre holds many cultural events and some are themed around the capital of culture. The dancers and singers who use this venue have performed at a number of events relating to the capital of culture. They are probably too low key to get much attention but they are there.
Im going now as I am a woman and dont wish to be shouted at. Too much testosterone on this site.......................I dont care how many communites have festivals; thats fine by me but as previously noted, we have long standing swedish, polish, nigerian, african, jamaican chinese communities and of course the Welsh. Indeed, a world in one city. Good for all of us
And a city in one world.
I've been to well over 100 different countries and you'd be amazed at how many fellow scousers I've met.
Went to Australia in 1980 - Adelaide - and the first guy I met was from County Road, Walton. As I spent the first two years of my life in Makin Street, off County Road, it was one hell of a coincidence.
How come you only quoted the beginning of my sentence? ..... The above quote/response doesn't make sense? Care to elaborate?Quote:

The problem arises when people try to claim they are the authority on a subject that is in itself open to debate.
Anyway ...back to the subject in question?
(not the first, and probably not the last time that has had to be said to you .....)
