Hi Steve. Both on my site in their 1980s guises.

The first one was the Griffin which later became the Twist and Shout, used to drink there too, it had a red phone box in there too. The second was the Prince of Wales but I drank in it in the 90s when it was called Shenanagans - then down to the old Dockers Hook (now Kerrys but closed) to see the big dipper.

I'll be watching the Reds play Wolves at the Lucky Bar in D.C. this afternoon. You're giving me a hankering for Guinness, so thanks for that. I will not be able to forgo the fish and chips I usually have there though!

That is the Royal Court theatre on the left and you are lookinbg up Gt Charlotte st past the market on the right. Great Charlotte st now only exists from Lewis's, past Blacklers to the Precinct but used to run right down to Queens Square where the Marriot Hotel now is. There were 4 pubs in a row on Gt Charlotte street on the map (numbered 13-16) and 6 out of 8 properties in a row were pubs.

As you look down Upper Dawson street past the army stores on the corner, with the books, you look past the grapes and the sticky out bit in the distance is the curved Theatre Royal which became the Union Cold Stores and fronted onto Williamson Sq. When you are in the Precinct, the exists still show the way out to these old streets such as Dawson Way and Houghton Street etc even though they don't really exist as such now.

This view is looking into Queens Square where the fruit and veg were sold at the front of the Stork Hotel which was still there in the very early 70s. The Stork is mentioned on the map.

Houghton Street, looking up towards Cases St. You will notice that pub No.50 on the map is the Belmont as clearly seen on Colin Wilkinson's 1963 Colour photo of the street.

The Boundary in Pilch Lane was demolished a couple of weeks ago

Flicking through that new book published by Colin Wilkinson's Bluecoat press, lots of pubs currently closed or lying in a state. He could have doubled the size of that book though, just look at the photos I took of every pub in existance in Liverpool a few years ago and how many have since gone.

The Spinners and Jacqui and Bridie in the other Gregsons Well from the 1960s tv documentary on Liverpool called Beat City.

The Goats Head has recently had some work done on it like new windows. There were some Asian gentlemen inspecting the work so it could be opening as a resturant.

...or they were officers from English Heritage? ;)

And if you fall over the pavement outside, there is a claims solicitor next door (make sure you're not just drunk though) and if you fall heavy, the hospital is just facing of course. ;)

Last time I photographed this pub, the old Clarence on the corner of Canal St and Bridge St, they were preparing it for a new venture,it opened as a plasterers with apt adverts like "Do you want to get plastered". Alas it`s for sale again.
