I save on Bog rolls as well,I buy the kitchen rolls for £1.00 and if I were to cut em in half I'd have 8 bog rolls

I like Tescos as it's middle ground, ie, the likes of Sainsburys and Marks & Spencers food hall are far too expensive. On the other hand, there are the 'lower end' cheapo supermarkets.
So I find that Tesco is somewhere in the middle which suits me - not too dear and not too cheapo.
Iceland. I do buy certain things in there, but not the frozen junk foods for a pound ! :) They are too cheap and nasty - full of chemicals and food colouring!
Iceland is ok if you choose the right things in there.
.. and who the heck can afford to food shop in Marks !! :eek:

I wasn't referring to Irwins - I know nothing about them. There were many other competitors that Tesco bought out, but continued to operate under the old name. Then there were the kite-flying Victor Value branches.Quote:

I hadn't heard of Vivo, but that one in Townsend Lane is the only one listed in Kelly's Directory for 1968.
There's one Victor Value listed in that directory - in Stanley Road, Bootle.

Hi Philip, just for curiosity, can you have a look in the 1968 Kelly's and see what supermarket was listed - not sure what number Breck rd it would be, but just past the old Royal/cinema/bingo - it's now a furniture shop and is next door to the present library.
I know there was definitely a large Tesco because we used to shop there in the mid to late 60's. But I'm a bit confused what it became after that - - I do remember approx 1972'ish it was taken over by another firm - something like a discount food supermarket (could it have been a Kwiksave ??) -- I remember very well the people queueing up to get job interviews.
I was a bit confused about Victor Value - when I come to think of it .. it may have been about 1980 before it became Victor value :) --- I remember going in there to shop, and I think their logo colours were dark blue and white. Can't think what happened after the 1980's - in 90's it became some kind of general household bargain store like Poundstretcher - now it is a furniture shop. :)

In the meatime, the only grocers (or similar) after the Royal are Tesco, near Agate Street.
Thomas Scott (Bakers) on the next block, and another Tesco near The Willows.

There were Victor Value shops all over the place*, but they were really Tesco in disguise. As I understand it, it was a ploy to remove the competition while they gathered strength and decided which they would re-brand as full Tescos and which to close. That's why it looked to an outsider as if Tescos had stalled.
* The only other one I can think of definitely that was local was the one in Hunts Cross, but I'm sure others will remember more...
There used to be a Victor Value near Cherry Lane and there was a little one in Landford Ave.
Going back to Tescos in the Swan they had one opposite the Red House late 50s early 60s.
They have now bought the site of The Green Dragon Pub next door to Whiston Hospital
to open another Express Store
Tesco are going into cars now - maybe they really are taking over the world ! :unibrow: :D

I listen to phone-in callers who keep mentioning about Tesco taking over the world but the answer is always the same in that it's supply and demand. They will only enter into something that the people obviously want or they'd be losing money on it. For me, if they can offer cheaper insurance, mortgages or cars than those that currently rip us off, so much the better. I just wish the exiting Leahy would put some money into Everton.

Any wonder the smaller shops are all closing, its all Charity shops and fast food shops now, which is a sure sign of decline !

Yes, the old High street was so much more than just a shop for the headscarfed women of the 60s and 70s as it was a local meeting place to catch up on the gossip and everyone knew each other and the shopkeepers were part of the community and much loved. Alas, the world is changing and it's even too much for some people that whilst not wanting to get wet or inconvenienced traipsing from shop to shop when it's all there under one roof, they even would park in the foyer of some of these shops if they could get the car in.
It's true Ged, our mums would meet in the shops and have a good natter. They would do a whole weeks shopping on Breck rd or Townsend lane. Both roads had loads of green grocers, cake shops, clothes shops, woolshops, newsagents, toy shops, etc, etc. We had 3 good fish mongers and now there are none at all in Anfield.
Living in Wolverton st off Richmond Park, we never had to go further than Belmont rd for our shopping - all our shops were on the lower part of Breck rd or on Townsend lane, or Priory rd. ( but we didn't shop along Priory rd much). We didn't even have to venture to the top of Breck rd past Belmont because we had all we needed on our doorstep. ( to what it used to be, Townsend Lane is like a ghost town now.)
As Ged says, everyone knew everyone else and all the shop keepers too.
When getting all these old LRO photos out, you realise just how much of the high street has gone. I was amazed at how thriving Heyworth Street and Byrom Street was, Park Road, both sides and Scotland Road. Lodge Lane, Smithdown Road. Independant Fishmongers, butchers, chandlers and fruit & Veg shops are fast falling away sadly.
You lived down the posh end!:) Our shops 'tother end of Breck Road were good too, and as Ged says Heyworth Street was part of a thriving shopping centre.Quote:

There was a small department store too on Breck rd .. ( can never remember the name - was it Brown's ? or maybe it was Sturlas that you mention - it was somewhere opposite Richmond Terrace - somewhere by Coniston or Bulwer st). Can you remember it?
Forgot to mention that we had Ethel Austins, Rays China shop, Toyland, ( down by the Rawdon library), Shorrocks record shop, Telefusion which was quite a big shop selling tvs, radios and there was a good record counter.
I could go on. Yes, there were plenty of shops.
Lizzie, re our end being 'posh' :) .. we used to think Priory rd was a bit posh ! :)Well, it was a bit - more staid if you know what I mean. The shops were a bit more select. We didn't go along there much. My mum usually went down Townsend lane where we had lots of food shops and fancy goods shops.
To see the state of Townsend now you'd never believe it was once thriving. Priory rd is not a patch on what it used to be. It's still ok'ish, but that 'staid' feel about the place has long gone! The nice old neighbours diminished and, as with all other places, all Tom, Dick & Harrys moved in - this is when districts start to decline.
Priory rd is just about clinging on.
Anyone remember the menswear shop on Oakfield rd ? ( just across from Belmont rd). I think someone has mentioned it on the forum before. Anyway, it was a great shop for getting denim, shirts, sweaters, jackets, etc. All the local mods would head for there for the latest gear :)
It's sad the way the area has declined. Too many houses have been bought to let and as you say any Tom Dick of Harry moves in. Priory Road has too many fast food shops, cafe's and off licences............. Just as well we still have Richards, Supaserve and Georgesons.Quote:
