Hi all,
Thanks for your reply Alan.Just to give you a few old mates from Garston Kenny Parry(Chesterton St)who's well known on the Liverpool music scene,Melvyn Corry (Ottway St),Roy Jones(Lincoln St)Eric Bushell(Chesterton St)my coisin Carl Ludo(York St)who was a bit of a lad, little David Smith (Chesterton St)who i think commited suicide,Peter Okell(Neptune St).I lived in Chesterton St until !962 and before that Thomas St off Kings St we were all street wise kids but i can't think of any of us getting up to any real trouble we were that knackered at night after playing football on top park for 2 hours each way and also when the 66 bus had it's terminal in Window lane(opposite the Clarence)if we asked the conducter nicely he would let us go to Halewod and back which was like another world to us, that couldn't happen today either the conductor would be seen as a paedo for befriending two ten year olds and of course health and safety.Good health John.::

A MASSIVE waste recycling plant in Garston would create jobs and help Liverpool council meet stringent environmental targets, it was claimed today. West Midlands-based Jack Allen Holdings is proposing to build several plants around the UK, including Garston docks. The multi-million pound plant would create 75 direct jobs, but business development manager Peter Coe said it would create many more indirect jobs. Read
A MASSIVE American-style waste recycling plant is planned for Garston Docks. Read
I'm not sure what to think until I see plans. The job creation can only be a good thing. 75 is quite a lot.
Of course, that's an issue. I wouldn't like any smells wafting over our house. Did you remember the nut smells from a few years ago?
I can't say I remember the nut smells, but I shall keep an aye on this all the same.
:ninja:
I'm living in Canada now and if the recycling plant is anything like the one near us you wont have to worry. It mainly recycles glass, paper and plastics . Theres no smells to speak of.
For those who didn't see tonight's BBC TV programme on genealogy, it was about the actor Griff Rhys Jones' ancestry. It seems he has Garston roots with his maternal side of the family ( Price) living on Window Lane and Vineyard St.
Those in the UK can download the programme from the BBC TV web site

From The Echo today:
PEOPLE living and working in Garston are being given a chance to have their say on a major public art project for 2008.
Artist Michael Trainor will launch his plans for the Artistic Republic of Garston and the Garston Embassy with a garden party at Wellington Street school today between 2pm and 7pm.
The event will be a chance for local people to learn more about proposals for the Embassy, which will be one of three specially commissioned Pavilions funded by Liverpool Culture Company and managed by the Liverpool Biennial, as part of next year’s Capital of Culture celebrations.
Further Pavilions will also appear in Kensington and Kirkdale – each with their own unique identity – staging a wide programme of exciting work throughout the year.
Michael Trainor’s idea for the Garston Pavilion has been inspired by Garston Cultural Village Campaign’s ambition to regenerate the area through cultural activity.
Michael is recommending that Garston becomes an ‘independent state’ throughout 2008, creating the Artistic Republic of Garston.
Wellington Street school will become the Republic’s Embassy and will act as the cultural centre for the town.
Along with the necessary trimmings of a civic building such as a fountain, a balcony of waving dignitaries and an entrance feature, the Republic will also have a newly commissioned flag, national anthem and a state car used to transport visitors to and from Liverpool city centre.
Alex Corina, artistic director of Garston Cultural Village, said: “Garston will be at the heart of the Capital of Culture Celebrations in 2008. There are a lot of talented and creative people in our community. We have to give young people the belief that they have a future in Garston.”
As well as hearing more about the plans for the Garston Embassy, visitors to today’s event can also take a special World Tour of Garston on a 1965 open top bus and enjoy a live performance by CPC Music jazz band.
Here's a few shots from today. It was a fascinating event and well worth attending. The open top bus tour around Garston was the highlight of my day.
Superb Taffy, I was working all afternoon unfortunately. I hear there's a bit of a Shindig at The Welly tonite?
Anyway, the attached pic reminds me of when we used to play within the buildings grounds. Our footy pitch can be seen marked out, me and Paul, They were the days :)
"Liked the pics Taffy" and remember the school, never realised it had the balcony above the main doors, The 'Idle hour' milkbar which was situated to the right of the school used to be a favourite spot in my teenage years!!
