I posted this pic I took or River View in the early 90's in a thread about 18 months ago. Didn't come up in search so I'll post it again
I must admit I like the new museum, but still in two minds on the black glass stuff going up
Proud Scouser, with a dabbling of Welsh and Irish.
bore yourself silly at my Flickr page...anorak central!
This river view rest centre should surely have been saved.
I think some people do forget just how crap it was around there in the 70s and that pic of course is even in the 90s.
I was round the canal area for the first time today and gotta say it looks better than photo's suggest.
Still don't think it's great and I do really dislike the muesum and that other thing but I guess it's an improvement on what was there.

Thing is Scouse, it was much the same when they filled in Georges dock, and built the Liver buildings. Look what an icon that's turned out to be!

The three Graces created a dead area around them. They are three monolithic structures that add no value to the pavement level streetscape. There has been many schemes to make are area around them a social area - all have failed. The current idea is a mill town development - a canal taking inland barges.
The 6 lane road behind them, The Strand, does not help at all - a part of the misplaced and ridiculous 1960s Shankland plan to have an inner motorway, the only section to be completed. Goree Warehouses were demolished to accommodate this abomination. This road should be removed and made a small access road for off peak times only. Pavement cafes and an animated area merging the Pier Head and Three Graces into the city beyond would ideally appear. The Cunard Building is better off being a 5 star hotel. Then maybe the three buildings will merge into the surroundings even more, which they never have.
Georges Dock in front of the buildings would have created a far better water based environment with boats bobbing about. No, it was not a good idea to fill the old Georges Dock, it was old at the time of filling. A little thought and we could have had the Three Graces as a part of a water based animated area, instead of the dead space they created. They just needed to be on the other side of the Strand.

becomes a Venice without canals, just another city, no
longer of special interest to anyone, least of all the
tourist. Would we visit a modernised Venice of filled in
canals to view its modern museum describing
how it once was?

Waterways, that was a belting post, makes you think and reminds you to look at things laterally and not blinkered, thanks.
Waterways is like a stuck record.
There,s more to Liverpool than the bloody river and ships.
I wish they'd fill the river in, I don't care if I never see another ship again or listen to anymore sentimental hogwash about the non-existant good old days of sail or steam-they were good for the rich few while our ancestors toiled for a pittance on filthy docks for crap money.
End of story.
Not much more as it is major port and founded on the sea.
Have you tried Nottingham?I wish they'd fill the river in, I don't care if I never see another ship again
I suppose we could do what they did to the Aral Sea:
Aral Sea

They knew what they were doing as well, knowing the sea would disappear. The climate has been affected as there is little rain because no water evaporates from the sea any longer. It has turned to desert. The Aral was large. 200km at the widest and about near 300km at the longest. There is a plan to take water via a canal from Siberia to fill it up.....2,500km!!!! Yikes!!! I suppose the canal can be used for boats too for transport. Iced up winter no doubt. It will take many years to fill up even if a canal is built to fill it.
People who were not old can remember ports around the sea with large ship in them.
