We did a lot of Shipping for James Troop on Sefton Street in the early 1980s, Bob Cain was the man who gave us the work, nice chap he was but I suspect your time there will have been before that John.

The new Amsterdam at Liverpool?

Deprived of its unique dockland waters Liverpool
becomes a Venice without canals, just another city, no
longer of special interest to anyone, least of all the
tourist. Would we visit a modernised Venice of filled in
canals to view its modern museum describing
how it once was?

I had a classmate at Heath Rd.,a boy called Roy Pendleton, when his Dad died ,Roy inherited his fishing boat and I often wondered what happened to him. The last time I saw him he was sweeping St.Mary's Rd. and a more contented young person you would'nt find. Any of you Garston folk recall him? He was hard to miss being of a "generous " build and always had the time of day for anyone.
Troops tended to do ships services: plumbing, electrics, engines, sheet metal. They would make the parts for engines, engine room equipment like steam (steam was used to start the engines), etc, if the part was not available. If a Japanese ship was in and needed a part, because they engiens were totally alien, they would make it.
They were Rolls Royce engine agents.

He couldn`t have been the last ,my brother carried on long after Mr Oxton lost his boat.
BBC TV did a series of programmes called "Through one pair of eyes" featuring our kid and the late Arthur Dooley, the famous sculptor, who our kid was friendly with,on board his fishing nobby. I remember our kid saying to him his sculptures were rubbish and Arthur replying, I know but people are buying them. The old Mersey Mirror ran an article on our kid as Liverpool`s last Fisherman with the whole front page a photo of him.
