Great photo, i'd love a boat.

Now can anyone help. Please excuse my thicknessness, but does anyone know what the term "Liverpool Bar" means out in the mersey. Is there something physically there or does it refer to the narrowness of the navigation ? Is there a lighthouse there to replace the one time pilot lightboat?

Fine photograph, Joe. Also thanks for definining what the Liverpool Bar is. I of course remember references to the Bar Lightship. Do I understand from underworld's post that the lightship is no longer there? Thanks in advance for that information.

She is lying up in the Canning Dock and has been for a couple of years now Chris. There was a for sale notice on her early this year but it has been removed.

There's nothing imaginary about it. The previously manned lightship was replaced by a large unmanned automatic buoy known as the Bar Racon (an acronym for Radar Beacon). It is positioned just west of the entrance to the main shipping channel into the Mersey. You can see its exact position in the centre of the attached screenshot taken from the AIS site a few minutes ago.
