Default Edge Hill Fruit and Vegetable Depot

    Hi Guys

Does anyone have images they could post of this ex LNWR depot that was on the corner of Wavertree Road and Tunnel Road?

    Regards

    Mike

Hi Mike, I've just had a quick search through the images I've got and have found nothing. Maybe someone can come to your aid.

There are shed retail places there now. Was that area a depot?

The depot is marked in red on the attached map extract. There is a photo in Liverpool Our City Our Heritage by Freddy O'Connor. Above the main entrance it says 'Fruit and Vegetable Depot LMSR 1881'. I always remember thinking this was odd as the LMSR only came into existance in 1923 but if you looked close you could see that the letters had been changed and it had previously said LNWR.

    Kev, thanks for looking

An utter crime that was. Knocked down without any say so or warning from the council.

    Hi Cadfael

Agree completely! I think the steps down are preserved but that's it!

Interesting inside views. Looking at these I remember visiting it around the same time with the roof removed. Did you get any shots of the outside?

    Regards

these pics were posted early last year when I put them in a thread about Edge Hill, they no longer come up in search which is prob why Kev couldn't find them.

Sorry Mike I only had photos from the inside that my dad's friend gave him. these are the ones that Cadfael put up, if you want to view bigger a larger version they are still on my Flickr page .
I didn't have pics of the outside as it was supposed to be saved, but I heard was knocked down accidently on purpose.

I uploaded a pic from a book which I shall put on again if you like.

You'd have thought City Council would have learned not to knock down our historical buildings by now. I used to pass this building everyday, and was quite shocked to see it being knocked down, about five years ago.

The site is now covered by the usual retail suspects - Netto, Home and Bargain and Iceland. To be fair, they did need some shops up that end of the city, but given there's load of empty properties just up on Wavertree Road, well that would have been too easy for our wonderful planners!!!

I remember this as Masseys scrapyard when I was a kid, lovely building and a shame it was torn down

This building could have been turned into shops/market for locals keeping the facade. The sheds that replaced it will never have any architectural interest or even last half as long as the original building.
