    Default Lester Gardens

    [IMG][/IMG]
Entrance to Lester Gardens from Walton Road.
This was always St Marys in my schooldays. It was originally St Marys cemetery from 1837 till 1898, then Liverpool Corporation took over in 1905 and called it Lestser Gardens recreation ground in honour of Major Lester who
was vicar of St Marys for 50 years. It never seem to have lost it`s first name.
The Astoria Cinema backed on to it and Westminster Road Baths back was on the other end. The building on the right was an Irwins grocery shop but finished up as a chemist shop,

As a youngster in the 1940`s I played football in here just behind the Westminster Rd baths as there were trees which could not have been better
positioned as goal posts each end.

It was always dark and shady - the trees and shrubs used to be a lot more overgrown than they are now.
