    Default Smithdown Road Area

A BRIDGE carrying the main West Coast railway line over a busy Liverpool road is to be repainted in time for Capital of Culture celebrations.

The bridge, which spans the A562 Smithdown Road is a battleship grey and pockmarked with rust patches.

Network Rail, which will be carrying out the work, has joined forces with Liverpool council to fund the £75,000 project because the road is one of the main gateways into the city centre and could be used by thousands of visitors during the celebrations.

The bridge will now be repainted a “subtle” green colour.

Jo Kaye, Network Rail’s area general manager, said: “We want to help create a good impression of the city on all the visitors coming to the many events taking place.”

One lane of Smithdown Road will have to be closed in each direction for up to six weeks from today while work takes place.

That track on that bridge goes past my street too.

When I went to places like Warrington and London, I could see my house from the train on that track.

Again (as per my Rocket post) has the council gone mad? There is going to be NO difference in tarting up a bridge for the stupid cost of £75,000 just so it looks a bit better. Will anyone notice? Why not spend £75,000 on shoring up half of the buildings that are currently falling down?

I'm sick of paying my way to fund the Council so they can just tart up stupid places without getting to the route of the problems in Liverpool. Soon, every road will be diverted because work is getting done!

To be fair to the council they are only paying £20000 of the total cost

You wonder who actually gets the contract and how much goes in a brown envelope. I really wonder whether a local chap with all the equiptment and scaffolding would challenge the council and say that he would do it for 1/2.

Oh boy , this one has really rattled me , I'm all for cleaning up our city , BUT £75K . on a bridge !

Anyone know where & how you submit a complaint , I'd even go as far as getting a petition up .

I think a few members from here and a couple of ladders and Snappel in a harness could do it for £500.

    I'll be the goffer ,
Go fer tea , butties etc .

Why can't advertisers pay for adverts if it's such a prime location ?
Or people on probation , they do the railings on parks & cemetries .
God there must be a cheaper way ..

Just rang them. I worked it out that if I park my works sprinter van underneath and put a ladder on the roof, i'll just reach it. £450

They should use a rust colour like on the forth bridge, it disguises the real stuff much better.

Our mate Tommy at the end of Cockburn Street would do that bridge for a lot less Karen. I agree !!!! the council have gone mad. It's like the lunatics have taken over the asylum.

    Default Painting the bridge

Let's hope Gouranga don't get there just after the paint job has been done. They seem to stick their graffiti signs all over the place !!

Seriously what about a make over for Smithdown Rd itself. The property around Toxteth Park Cemetery area looks a complete mess
