Tide may be changing in favour of the iron men

    TWO planning

councillors who did not vote to keep the Antony Gormley statues in Sefton are likely to make a U-turn in support of the artwork.

    Predictions of a

change in the tide within the borough council's planning committee came last night as Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell backed the Daily Post's Save Our

    Statues campaign.

Labour councillor Jim Mahon had voted against keeping the 100 iron men on Crosby beach, while his colleague Daren Veidman's vote

    was recorded as an abstention.

The Daily Post understands Cllr Veidman has now claimed his vote was miscounted and he was actually in favour of the

planning application, which was rejected on

    Wednesday.

    Story continues...

    I've read Debi Jones's

Party Political Broadcast, and can tell her that we don't need to be told what "cross-party" means.
Presumably the majority of her constituents don't

belong to the 90% of people who want the statues to remain.
AND ISN'T IT CONSIDERED EXTREMELY RUDE TO SHOUT AT PEOPLE IN CAPITAL LETTERS?

Heres a few photos I took at the begining of November. The statues and the beach itself make it very easy to take great photos with little effort. Almost as if they had been put there so people could experiment photographing them. It would be a real shame if they went any where. I tried to go and see them again today, but couldnt get more than 200m from the carpark because of the winds.

ON CROSBY beach they are frozen figures but on the internet, the 100 Gormley statues have taken on a life of their own. As campaigners prepare to jump the final hurdle in their fight to keep Antony Gormley's Another Place installation on Merseyside for good, the iron men are becoming superstars on the internet.

Proof of their popularity is now beyond doubt - after fans of the sculptures placed more than 10,000 pictures of the statues on internet picture site Flickr.

    Default Another Place... some photographs

Hello everyone. I'm new to this excellent site and this is my first posting.

I grew up in Crosby and this beach was one of my favourite playgrounds. Back then, very much more shipping passed close by en route for the docks of Liverpool and the beach was littered with their flotsam and jetsam, not to mention a generous coating of filthy oil- we kids were constantly in trouble for coming home covered in the stuff! The beach also extended much further north in my childhood- construction of the modern extension to the docks known as the Seaforth Container Terminal- visible in the background of a couple of these pictures- was commenced when I was a pupil at Waterloo Grammar School, just down the road. Prior to that, that part was a great area of rolling sand dunes littered with pyramid-shaped 'tank traps' and pill boxes- leftovers from the war- and a great playground for us!
We queued up for the opening of Crosby Swimming Baths next to the beach and subsequently went there often. This, I notice, has since been replaced.
One of the few blessings of the radical decline in the trade to the Port of Liverpool is that Crosby beach, as myself and my family (some of who where visiting here from their home in Australia) encountered it when we first came to see Another Place, is that it is very cleaner than I remember it. Wonderful, too, to see so many visitors from all over the world, drawn here by Anthony Gormley's figures, enjoying it too.
But, then, Crosby beach was always 'another place' for me!
