But Google seems to put a moderm #6 at the bottom end.

Did the numbering system change over the years?

And what town hall when the street was first numbered?

It doesn't,Az....the link you posted has no6 at the top end of Mere Lane ie opposite the Mere Bank pub.

Strange... when I click on it - and when I made the link - the Google marker is at the left end of Mere Lane and just before the big white building on the top side of Mere Lane. It is only 100 ft along Mere lane from the triangular pub.

Does the UK Google maps react differently?

The text description, as I read it, seems to imply the house was at the Pub end of the street...
