Hiya Alan. 1968 until 1978. Only a short time in the grand scheme of things but as it was those years from aged 6 to 16, they were very impressionable years and it did make an impression on me. I did live over the road from it anyway from birth until 1968 and then over the road from it when I left until from 1978 until 1998 when I moved up here because of work.

I thought the David Lewis was a concert hall of some kind! I know I tap danced and was in the ballet chorus (never had a ballet solo,

) there. My dance class teacher was Lillian Lloyd if I remember correctly, went from about 5 years old. We had a yearly show at the David lewis.

What a shame to lose such buildings as the David Lewis theatre and Stanley Hospital.

The Royal Hospital on the other hand is an eyesore from any angle!

Has it gone now? I remember all our families having to go and watch kids tap and prance in costumes for a few hours. My father was such a good sport about it. Why are they pulling those wonderful pieces of architecture down?? Bad

Yes, the David Lewis is described as a theatre, hotel and club and I've pictures of the Hotel entrance, Restaurant and Cafe entrance and a close up of the ornate tiling and wording and clock at the roof level. I will get around to posting them eventually. Also a nice array of Interior and Exterior views of the Turner Memorial Home on Dingle Vale.

It closed in 1977 when these pictures of it were taken by Harry Ainscough and are now LRO property.

What a shame. It was like Broadway to us when we were kids. Getting your solo dances perfect for the David Lewis, getting your cosumes for the David Lewis etc. It was so exciting. I was in awe of that building.
