My father survived being torpedoed three times on three different minesweepers on those Russian convoys.
I still have a letter sent by one of his Captains congratulating him on his receiving his 'oak leaves' the award for a Mention in Dispatches.
The only name that I can remember of one of his ships was the JASPAR .
He never spoke about his war experiences until one day when we were driving back from the 1965 semi-final - I was driving and he just started talking - To this day I feel tears when I think of what these brave men went through during those terrible war years.
Here is a photo of the Oak Leaf for the Mentioned in Despatches Award.
The `MiD`is only one of three awards that can be awarded Posthumously, 1 Victoria Cross, 2 Military Cross and 3 Mentioned in Despatches.
The lady`s father was also `MiD`
