Had many a new years eve in the Irish centre,,,,

I also recall the band nights. I played there with Farons Flamingos as support to a local "glitter" band. I really enjoyed the night, my only complaint being the large ceiling that gave an echoey sound. The bar with its old oil paintings sticks in my memory and we stayed till the wee small hours drinking. Another night I saw Ian Hunter with his band. This was in the decline era of the club and the stage lights fused and it took 5 minutes before they were fixed. Ian Hunter continued singing during the blackout, a memorable night.

The very first club i went to was the'el torro' on Rice Lane, bladdered after three pints. That was the age of your dance partner placing her finger on top of your head and you had to do a spin,i was already spinning anyway and got carried out by me mates,then had to navigate Higher Lane on my way home. Im ok now......can manage five pints and a kebab.

The cafe you mentioned was on Smithdown Rd. It was called the "Old Dutch" cafe, it had a big windmill on the wall. If you are going out of town past Wavertree Playground it was past the railway bridge on the right.
The reason I knew the address was because the owner was a friend of mine and I worked there part time for a while. Don't worry about the mistake, we have all done it at one time or another.

Hi, I am the grandaughter of the owners of Dutchies - Betty and Frank. Betty Died in 1972 and Frank in 1975. If you or anyone else has memories of the cafe or my Grandparents I would love to hear them.

Lots of the places we talked about are mentioned here - (it's about 20 mins long). The sound is a bit poor in parts but worth listening to all of it.

it's a shame it's now mostly all gone and those great socialising times have changed. like someone says in the film - it's all happening in the town centre now, but the city clubs are not always accessible or suitable for all.

Yes. it was number 60, opposite the Somali club. you could also get wines and spirits.

Went to the Somali a few times,till the doorman got done in!! What was the name of the pub,round the corner,from the Rialto? It's well gone now,of course!

82/83 was the Somali clubs demise,many clubs in Toxteth were not licensed,I fink the only club that was licensed was the Nigerian? been in a few unlicensed one meself when police raids happened.

Remember going into town night clubs and when they closed we would go into upper parliment street clubs(houses really) met some birds at the town night clubs and took em to one of the parly clubs,anyway one of the bird said to her mate..."Bit dark in here ain't it"....

I also recall the last days of the Irish Centre around 96/97, a beautiful building, the owners had very kindly let us rehearse in the cellar,every day it opened to the public around 10.am and served the best breakfast you could find,including white pudding,which id never come across, to mainly students and the local community,a great mish mash of people who really appreciated its place in the community. We were even lucky enough to watch Peter Green soundcheck, as well as acts including the Real People and many others in its fine auditorium.At the time we were unaware of the financial plight they were under and when we turned up one morning to rehearse, the whole place was locked up and boarded with all the owners assets inside and of course, our gear in the cellar. Straight away,Kevin ,the main owner staged a roof top protest/presence and he was there on that roof for months,battling to get everything out of the building,including our gear.In the winter months,we would all turn up with food, blankets etc, people from right across the board ,showing solidarity.....eventually they released everything from the building and Kevin came down from the roof but the building has never recovered,we often think about Kev, be great if he read this forum and hes got his feet up in a nice warm place.Let us know mate x.
