I'm not absolutely sure when or why the name of The Towers was changed to
Rankin Hall. I think it was when it became a University of Liverpool student
residence, and the name Rankin may commemorate a University benefactor. To
find out who occupied the house at different times you should consult the
annual Liverpool street directories, which are available on microfilm on the
fourth floor of the Central Library in William Brown Street.

There is also a short publication outlining the history of Rankin Hall when
it was in use as a University residence. It was compiled by Adrian Allan,
the University Archivist, and includes interesting reminiscences by people
who lived there. There may be a copy in the local studies section of the
Central Library (also on the fourth floor), and there is certainly one in
the Archives and Special Collections department of the Sydney Jones Library,
    Chatham Street.

As for the origins and early history of the house, these are poorly
documented. It appears to have been built by an American-born merchant
called John Newton Beach, possibly as a speculation, because he does not
seem to have lived there himself. The name of the architect is identified in
an article about Audsley in the 'Building News', 7 March 1890, p. 336.

I hope this helps. Good luck with your research.

    Best wishes,

    Joseph Sharples.
