Bibby Line operated from Parkgate - they are still going today.
Chester was the main port for Ireland. Watling Street ran from Dover, via London to Chester, so easy to get to. The Dee started to silt up in the late 1600s/early 1700s with the trade moving to Parkgate not far away. The Welsh Irish Sea coast was nearer to Ireland but hills and mountains were between, so Parkgate had an advantage, despite a sea voyage twice the length. Ships being attacked by pirates was a problem.
Liverpool's Old Dock was already built by this time, but Liverpool was dealing with inner Lancashire and trade with America and beyond. Liverpool catered for larger ships and used an enclosed dock for loading and unloading. Parkgate was mainly Irish trade. Parkgate was not competing with Liverpool, more dealing with different trade routes and hinterland areas. Loading and unloading at Parkgate was inefficient either quickly at high tide or via barges.
To get Chester back in action a canal was built in the Dee river into the Dee Estuary in the early to mid 1700s. The results were mixed. This diverted water along the Welsh side of the river, reducing the tidal scour to remove silt, rendering Parkgate less unusable and eventually unusable. Parkgate as a major port was only short lived. Chester followed suit.
The coming of the steam train sealed Parkgates fate. Trains could get to and from deep water Liverpool to anywhere. The Mersey ferries were steam and reliable. The enclosed docks were a great bonus to give fast turn-arounds and ease of loading and unloading cargos.
The last fishing boat tied up at the quay in 1948.

becomes a Venice without canals, just another city, no
longer of special interest to anyone, least of all the
tourist. Would we visit a modernised Venice of filled in

how it once was?
