Next door to the "Big House"?

Walking along Lime st.,the other day,I noticed this building next to the "Big House"! I thought it was part of the pub that wasn't used,but on closer inspection,it seems to be seperate premises,and also that a dividing wall runs up through the line of the windows,(arrowed in red) suggesting that the frontage,is different to the building behind! What was there originally,anyone here know?

The 'extra' wall is running structural support up through the building. Something that must not have been needed when it was built. Or more weight has been added, or the whole thing was falling down and this was the cheapest way to stabalise the block. IMO
You could check the records at the Planning and Building Control Depts at the council.

It looks as if you will have to pop along to the office to check this out as the online data is from 2000 on, only.

Well spotted Steve. The roofline would suggest it's part of the Big House building but it's strange that a wall runs up behind a window.

I've been puzzled by this building.
Yes, the roofline seems to be part of The Vines, but the size of the windows match the other building, and it's of the same age (1840s?), and why have the windows been given extra decoration?
The Vines was rebuilt in 1907.
The building in question is 79 Lime Street (check your street directories).
It's not listed in the 1968 Kelly's, so was probably unoccupied even then.
I'm sure a light bulb is on at night.

I've just checked the 1900 Gore's.
77 to 87 Lime Street was The Vines.

It's strange that the 'new' Vines didn't incorporate 79.

The 'problem' seems to be with the white box on the roof. Odd that it is built between the eaves of the pub and the frontage, but nevertheless it is the left hand wall of this white box that is supported by this new wall/pier. Water tank?

My guess it was an allyway leading to the side of the bighouse at sometime? a courtyard,throughfare.

Bit like Thomas Rigbys in Dale St,the thoroughfare uns up the side of it.

The Vines was rebuilt in 1907.

The vines was built 1867 and wasn't rebuilt but refurbished in the interior 1907.The architect was Walter Thomas,part ofits structure was lost and the wallin question is part of that area.

There's summat nagging away in the back of me mind that those doors where not there at one time and wrought Iron railings gates were there? can't find a pic to see if there was.

late 60's? I used to walk past it to sign on in job office on renshaw street and this is where that nagging thing is coming back to me.

You could be right there. It looks like an added frontage, set forward a little from the original face?

The more I think about it the more I'm convinced it was an enclosed courtyard where the draymen took the cask/barells in?

That white tank? is still on the roof back then. Not sure it's a street sign though George because if you look directly below it, it looks in fact like steps leading up into a doorway?
