Yes, I DO have a good memory. Seriously, I can remember being in my pram. Scares the Bejesus out of my family. I loved Blacklers too, Steve and still pine for the basement, where you could buy anything. My Mum had 9 kids so we only window shopped in Hendersons then off to Frosts on County Road or Sturlas for the rest of the stuff!!! I used to like Owen Owens too; less posh than Hendersons and Bon Marche but still up there. I LOVE TJs then and now. Great shop. Lots of junk but diamonds amongst the dross.

Hi Partsky, how are things with you? Yeh,I remember Blacklers basement well,(but being dragged round by my arm!) and Frost's on Walton rd, which I'd forgotten! Were you ever priviledged to go to the self-service cafe in Lewis's,going past the"Red Rose" restaurant, which was for rich people,we were told!!!! Anyway, bet you never thought you'ld end up in lovely Maghull!(see thread on same)

I know, I always found being 7 and in a pram highly embarrassing. How about you Lindy?
I vaguely remember it, as I was only a child myself, but my best friends uncle died in the fire. Very sad.

No Steve, my Mum was more easily intimidated in posh shops and we could only get her into TJs Cafe. We and my mate used to go to the Owen Owens cafe for chocolate cake and tomato and sausage and I STILL felt out of place. Never felt comfortable in Lees restuarant until I was 40. Yeah, I never thought I would end up living out the of the City by Maghull (we are in nearby Lydiate) but wouldnt it be great to wander around Sturlas, Frosts, Blacklers, Owen Owens, and Lees again?
I was well into my 20s/30's before I even went into M&S,and ended up with a pile of fresh food, that I had to eat, before it went off! (no fridge!) As for Lee's....."never knowingly undersold" had me flummoxed for years, I thought it was some sort of Zen mantra!! Sturla's I only know from the cheques, but I did go to Henderson's a few times, though I've no idea why, probably just to gawp! It's sad (in a way) that so many of these have gone! Does anyone remember Gimbles, an American company, who moved into the temporary premises of St.Johns precinct,in Charlotte st?
Yes I remember Gimbles very well.
George Henry Lees - I never liked that shop. It's like a blinkin' maze and I could never find what I wanted in there or find my way out of it !! I don't think I've ever bought one thing from Lees - - - erm, hang on - think I might have bought some buttons from haberdashery ! but that's all.
I don't buy much from Marks and don't to go in there a lot. Once in a blue moon I look in there.
I like Marxies food. I used to like GHL for the cafe. Decent cuppa and a nice bun.

That's probably because it was 2 shops,"G.H.Lee",at the back, and "Bon Marche"(on Church st)joined up! You used to leave one,to go into the other, before they joined them up,which wasn't till the 80's!
