Have you enquired with anyone from the Church with regards to the origin of the sandstone block?

Hello Bill

No I have not. Of course I took that photograph some 45 years ago, so whether those sandstone blocks are still around I don't know... and since I am in the United States now I am not in a position to check any time soon. If Kev or Taffy or someone else local could check it would be good to know if the pieces of sandstone lying about the churchyard are still there or have been cleared away. Also then if there is an email address for the church that I could use to enquire.

Bob Metcalf has now left the Church which is back to its vicarless state.

Many of the old stones lying around the churchyard seem to have come from the first church on the site which was demolished in the early 17th C. The stone from this church was buried in the foundations of the second church and came to light when this was too demolished in the early 1870s. A lot of the stone was used to complete the boundary wall of the 3rd church now standing on the site.

I've not been around the churchyard for a while. Might be time to have another look

First time have visited and have to say it's great hearing about UTB.

I'm researching my family tree and my Mum, Dad, Grandparents & more came from UTB. I remember always being sent by my Nan to Gillespies - both my Nan's lived in Monkfield Way, Mum & Dad growing up opposite each other... with the bank of grass in-between them. We always used to play down the shore as kids and my Mum & Dad used to say that's where they would go on 'holiday'!! Times Change!!

Doing the research it's amazing how many streets that all the different parts where from.... Taskers/Kehoes/Hooleys - Shand Street, Sinclair Street, Locke Street, Lincoln Street, Otway Street, Vulcan Street..... and over by the park Basing Street & Calthorpe Street... Interesting they all lived so close

going back over it alot of people worked in the Bobbin Works, my Dad worked in the Tan Yards, so it's been interesting everyones different views

Welcome to the Forum. I'm not aware of a Clarence Grove in the Garston Village area. It might have been within the township of Garston which is much larger. If you can send me a private message with the full names and ages of your family in Clarence Grove in the 1880s, I may be able to find them in the census. This will then give a clearer indication of where Clarence Grove was located.

Thanks Taffy... but I already have my families details from the Census... I was just wondering where Clarence Grove actually was..... back in the forum someone mentioned previous that they had family from there..???

I assumed your family were at Clarence Grove in the census. By locating them, I could then look at surrounding streets and deduce where Clarence Grove was located.

Clarence Grove was a little cobbled street off Neptune Street. Neptune Street ran between Raglan Street and Banks Road. Clarence Grove was very narrow with the houses facing each other across the cobbles, fairly close together. From memory I would guess there were maybe five or six houses on each side. Hope this helps.

Hi All

What a great site, I've just spent the last 4 hours taking a trip down memory lane, the photos are fab!!

The band was the Pandamonium Band and my dad (Jimmy Skidmore) was a member back in the 70s & early 80s. What a time they all had - all in the name of charity of course!!

I too remember the dolphins in Garston Baths - I thought I'd dreamt it as everyone I mentioned it to thought I was mad! I think it must have been later than 1970 though.

My Gt Auntie Sophie, used to own the chippy in James Street and her sister Doris used to own the dairy in the same steet - back in the 50s & 60s. Their father was William Jackson.

I remember the Parades that used to end up on the Park where there would be a fairgound. The 1977 Silver Jubilee is the one that stands out in my mind - probably because of the big street party we had after it.

I used to love walking through the tree lined park with my Grandma, in the days before dutch elm disease.
