Sirob, brill again as ever

The third one of your latest batch might not mean anything to most people but it brought back memories for me.

Taken from across the Odeon roof, it shows Gerard Gardens in Aug 1970 with part of the technical college (Now the John Moores) being built behind. This construction was literally 100 metres from our back veranda, so it could be followed and replicated by me with my lego and dinky toys quite easily.

My nans/uncles heights, Mazzini, can also be seen amongst the many up on Netherfield Road.

Some pics of my local station, Seaforth & Litherland. The first is from 29/8/1955 & shows a overhead train about to depart for Dingle, this view is looking towards Southport. The next is a overhead train again, this time looking to Liverpool. The next two show electric baggage cars, the first a L&Y car, second a LMS one. last is a modernised overhead train

That is the only pic I have seen from that angle showing the blocks rising up the hill at Everton. The view from the Anglican cathedral gave a New York look, as that faded photo just about does.

In the winter of 1968/9, I visited Lostock Hall loco shed, called in at Ormskirk in time to photograph the lifting of the Skelmersdale branch.
At Hall Road, by the beach, the water tap was much in use in 1963
I'm trying to salvage what I can of the negs from the sixties, but a lot are damaged. If there is a reasonable image then I will post it.

There are very many that have an interest in the transport scene from yesteryear, For me, railway photos from the Liverpool area pre 1990´s are fascinating,the 4 main terminals especially!! keep on submitting them please all of them, sometimes the quality of older photos is poor but the atmosphere is huge!

More b/w railway . A sand covered birkdale palace in 1955, this was on the Southport & Cheshire lines extension rly. a failed attempt to compete with the Exchange to Southport line. next is crown st in 1972, if am correct the tunnel far left led to Edge hill. Brunswick goods is seen in 1973 . The last one says edge hill, but i am sure it is Huskisson goods yard, anyone confirm?

Rare pics, indeed, Merseywail! So sad to see Birkdale Palace abandoned. i only saw it as a bare platform in 1964. The "Jinty" is at Huskisson because in the left background is a box pylon. These straddled the canal and carried the 132Kv line from Clarence Dock Power station. You could hear fizzing from them in wet weather!
Regarding Crown Street, the tunnel on the left was the original bore and was much smaller(for horses). There was a basin cut out of the rock wall in it, which was fed by a seepage of water. Towards Edge Hill(behind Chatsworth St.) the cutting had a series of derelict arches on the left. At the back of one of these was a tunnel. It was about 5 feet high and four feet wide. Hewn out of the living rock, it meandered for about 100 yards, ending in a collapse. Don't know what it was, I was only 14 at the time. Can I still be prosecuted for trespassing on the railway?????????

Quite near Liverpool were a number of collieries. Their engines may have been photographed, but not the surface. Coal mining leaves a fascinating industrial landscape.

This is my set of the Plaza, Allerton(Classic to you) This cinema closed in April 1971 and the site redeveloped. The manager allowed me access to the projection room and the projectionist provided the stage lighting display. You can see heads in the balcony! A unique feature was the fountain in the foyer. Although blurred, I have included a pic of it.

Sirob, was Murphy's War the last picture shown?

The cars are: Ford Escort 2 door, Hillman Hunter, Wolsey 1500 & Austin 1100. I had in my time a Hunter and an 1100.

The final programme at the Classic, Allerton, was; "A Shot in the Dark" starring Peter Sellers and "The Hills Run Red" starring Thomas Hunter?????
