Default Yates Wine Lodge:Birkenhead...comming of age

Today (19Apr08) is the 18th birthday of Yates Wine Lodge in Birkenhead...if only we could all celebrate inside...

    And finally the datestone...

The site is due to become a superstore and underground car-park. It is sad that this building hasn't lasted long!

it looks older than that doesn't it? It's a nice building and shame it's coming down.
are there any other supermarkets nearby, does the area really need one?

There are smaller stores in the Grange (with iceland, Farmfoods and Cooltrader) but thats all. Up until the mid 90's, Birkenhead boasted a Asda superstore...but this was demolished to make way for Europa Square and Mecca Bingo.

The new superstore will be Asda, the nearest stores are in Woodchurch and Liscard.

It was really freaky looking back at the images today...I didn't realize the date on the plaque untill I got home! Its hard to imagine that 18 years ago today, that building was brand new and open for business.

oh yes I remember that Asda.we used to go there 20 years ago. my dad got free passes for tunnel as he was disabled and it was nearer than the one at Huyton. I bought a small Xmas tree, with decorations, for a fiver.
we stopped using it when Rose Lane Tesco opened.

You stopped using the Xmas tree when Tesco opened?
    Seems rather drastic.

Shame this building is getting knocked down, but is it?
I noticed this week that alot of work is going on inside and Mc Donalds isnt going so maybe something new is happening to it.

I used to work on the door there a few nights aweek a while back.

Yeah, to be honest, since those images were taken, some work has been going on inside the building...but weather this is prep work I don't know.

All of a sudden, things seem to be happening this side of the water; we've got an office block going up next to the Waterloo Pub...called Queensgate. There is also a small development just off Hammy Sq taking place too not to mention "Riverview" on Holt Hill in Tranmere.

What's the 'Riverview' development in Tranmere? I take it that's the rather big building that you can see going up when you look towards Tranmere from the town centre.
I've been wondering what it is...
