James William Carling was a Bold St pavement artist in the olden days, born in Addison st and had works published in Edgar Allen Poe's the Raven. JWC is buried in a paupers grave in the cemetery off Rice Lane.
There was a time I was "a long haired fella with a pony tail" but that was long ago. (but I
do still have a decent thatch even now, thankfully- my little bro lost all his when a teenager!)
I found that religious scenes were popular- I often, for example, did Greek Orthodox-style Madonna and Child icons. Old ladies would cross themselves and chuck in a quid! I only once got harangued for 'sacrilege'..
A common thing was that I'd come back the following day to find that the faces had been neatly removed in the night...
Fascinating stuff about James Carling and new to me. Was any of his pavement art ever recorded I wonder?
