Thread: Kingsway tunnel

    Default Kingsway tunnel

My apologies if this is a really idiotic thing to ask but, if Queensway was named after Queen Mary who opened it in 1934, then who is the 'King' in Kingsway from 1971? It's not named after the Duke of Edinburgh is it? Surely not!!!

I think it was because one was Queens the other had to be Kings.

I thought the Queen asked for Kingsway in commemoration of her father King George VI.

    I never knew that, Ged.
I would have agreed with Waterways.

It's a bit like the RC Cathedral being designed by a C of E chap, and vice versa.

Oops, I don't know if the queen specifically asked for that though, though she does say in her speech, words to the effect of i'm proud to name this new mersey tunnel, Kingsway in commemoration of blah blah blah - it's in Paul's (The Gardens) film, Gardens of Stone. You must have dozed off at that moment Philip

I was blinded by the great images.
Let me know when the next screening is, and I'll promise to listen carefully.

That was part of the reason for me asking. Logic told me that a tunnel opened in the 30's would be Kingsway, while one from the 70's would be Queensway. Thanks for digging the info up.

One was Queensway so the other had to be called Kingsway. So who shall they name it after? Which King as there was none on the throne. The Queens Dad of course - who was long dead.
