    Default ?107m Liverpool roads plan set to get go-ahead

    A THREE-YEAR £107m programme to improve Liverpool’s transport system, including plans for the Hall Lane bypass, look set to be approved tomorrow.

    The city council’s executive board is being asked to approve plans including starting major works on the long-awaited bypass which has been the subject of years of wrangling.

    After more than 20 years of residents’ campaigning, work will finally start on the new road link-ing Islington to West Derby Street, instead of cars being forced down narrow and congested Hall Lane.

    Original plans for the bypass were thrown into doubt when plans for the building of a new Royal hospital appeared to clash with the planned route.

    But, after a lengthy stalemate, council leader Warren Bradley negotiated a compromise which allowed both to go ahead.

    The cabinet will be asked to give the go-ahead to the £12.5m road which will create a much improved route between the end of the M62 at Edge Lane and the centre. They will be asked to approve the Tran-sport Capital Programme up to 2011 which will attract funding from the Department for Tran-sport. This amounts to £30.4m over the three years but will be used to attract funding from the European Regional Development Fund, the Northwest Regional Development Agency and other bodies.

    Other schemes in the programme include a study into the Speke/ Halewood southern approach and Atlantic Avenue in Sefton.

    Road safety schemes will take place across the city, improvements to the cycle network and initiatives to improve street lighting.

    Cllr Mike Storey, executive member for regeneration, said: “It is vital that we get the city’s infra-structure right to support its regen-eration and this programme will ensure important schemes are carried out. It will lever in millions of pounds into the city and benefit all forms of transport users.”

    Sounds like it might be beneficial.

    But, everytime you see an initiative with Bradley/Storey mentioned, is your reaction automatically ' oh dear' rather than 'oh good'? Mine is.

    All been said before.

    Two words: Kings Drive.

    If they had built that then half of the congestion especially around South Liverpool would be gone!

    Originally it was going to be the outer ring road taking all the workers from Garston through Woolton/Gateacre/Huyton and beyond.

    Parts of Kings Drive exist in Woolton by the Sainsbury's - ever wondered why one part of the road is duel carriageway and one part isn't? One council got in and made an attempt at starting it off when the next council got in and stopped it all. There was going to be a roundabout at the bottom of Kings Drive and Out Lane with a large road which is now Hunts Cross Avenue as a branch off line.

    If you ever go to Hunts Cross Avenue, it stops at one end by a fence and was supposed to join up with Woolton Road, plus it's the size of a motoway for a minor road!

    Kings Drive would go under the loop line and then carry on with the Kings Drive which is off Childwall Valley Road (one small road and a massive grass verge.

    WORK on a much awaited bypass that will improve traffic flow between the Liverpool city centre, Edge Lane and the M62 is set to start in the autumn.

    Liverpool Council’s executive board are being asked to approve a timetable that would see work start on the Hall Lane bypass near the Royal Liverpool Hospital later this year. more >>

    Well, improved traffic and all that is rather nice... i just feel ever so slightly miffed a the prospect of demolishing perfectly good solid victorian houses in Edge Lane that would be worth an absolute fortune if one could be bothered to repair/renovate them. I bet you any money they would scrub up well!

    My nana used to live on Layton Road and I always used to think that Kings Drive was extreamly odd. And the way there was a metal fence at the other side.Thanks for the explaination Cadfeal your a sweetie

    HI, i am very interested in the Kings Drive scenario, for many years I have tried to work out the logic for the current layout!
    Can you tell me when these changes were originally proposed, and why they were never completed, was it resdient uproar or money issues?
    Perhaps also why it has never been mentioned again in recent times?

    With all the congestion in the Woolton Village/Gateacre Village/Lee Park areas, this would almost certainly remove it over night, so why has it not been completed, surely the council of this day would realise the benefits of it far outweigh a bit of grass that may be lost? Even if half of it was finished off, such as the Hunts Cross Avenue being linked right through and onto Woolton Road, or just the Kings Drive connection, certainly either would benefit thousands of motorists everyday, and ease the life of others who are stuck in their homes looking at queues everyday!

    Put simply, each time a local council got it, they decided it was a good ideal, the following council got in and decided it was a bad idea and so on and so on. Kings drive would have been a lovely dual carriageway all the way down to the roundabout at the bottom of Out Lane, linking up both sides of Hunts Cross Avenue before continuing along under the loop line and towards the current Kings Drive by Childwall Valley Road.

    It's only when you look from the air to see how messed up it all is. My uncle was raised in Woolton and saw this took shape from day one.

    Was Kings Drive Part of the planned Inner motorway? Is Queens Drive by that matter?
