    Default Swimming baths

There was a discussion today with lots of callers on the Roger Phillips phone in regarding Liverpool's lost open air baths with people recalling Burlington st, Mansfield St, Bootle etc with side issues concerning other open water bathing such as the scaldies down by Tate & Lyle in the canal or up by the tar works in Litherland.

Of course New Brighton was mentioned and I also remember rock ferry.

There was also of course Cornwallis street salt water baths but this was enclosed. I notice there are also threads about Crosby baths and Garston baths already existing here.

Here are some from the port cities site.

    Default Park Road Open-air Baths?

    I'm puzzled by those photos.
Steble Street is now called Park Road Sports Centre, but the Baths weren't open-air.
There were open-air baths in Gore Street (opened in 1898), but they were near Mill Street, and I don't think they would have looked as 'modern' as the second photo, or so 'rural'.

Steble street baths. This is where I learnt my kids to swim. It was where they went with the school so it was known to them and so easier and the water also started at ankle deep leading down to 3 or 4 feet whereas my local ones then at Everton Park were 3ft to 6ft. It was a saturday morning ritual in the early 1990s and then a quick nip to Sayers on Park Road for my sausage rolls and cakes - Mmmm.

great pic Ged such memories on your pic you can see a red door and the rest boarded up this was an open area and had aticket office type window you had to queue up to wait while they emptied out for the next session it also had the old football type turnstiles which you went through after paying your 7d ( this was in 1962) the first pool on the right was mixed and the second pool male only we used to swim in the nude if we forgot or didnt have a cossy

    Thumbs up Baths.

    Hi Kev,
While your on the subject of swimming baths could you ask your
readers if anyone has a photo of Woolton bath from the balcony
around the forties/fifties,showing the alterations in the tiles on the
bottom of the bath when it was changed from round to rectangle.
In the corners at the six foot end you could see the new tiles making
up the corner in the old dirty green crazed tiles, and from half way down
the bath to the three foot end the clean new tiles making up the
    extention.
This could be seen plainly from the balcony. I've been trying to get
a photo of this for a few yrs now.
If anyone has I would be very pleased to hear from them at
    tippingeg@netscape.net

    Cheer's,

    Tippo.

    PS,
    Sorry Kev
I didnt realise the date was so far back.

Steble Street ! oh what memeories....its where our school St Silas took us in an attempt to teach us to swim, the changing rooms where all around the pool, boys on one side girls on the other, it seemed such a long walk especially in the cold weather when you came out of the baths into the cold and we all had wet hair !.
I also went to the Wash house with my Nan, I remember the smells,a mixture of soap, bleach etc , the steam and more so the lovely toast afterwards never tasted anything so good !.
There was also private baths where you paid (sixpence I think) and you where given a huge "plug" so you could enjoy a soak in a proper bath, instead of the old tin one, that was brought into the kitchen once a week filled with water and one after the other the whole family would use !!
    Happy days
