Question researching ship names for novel

Hi I am writing a novel and need to find the names of vessels that brought the Irish famine victims from Ireland to Liverpool. I know they were steamships and I have been able to find the names of the ships that went from Liverpool to Canada and US, but I have not been able to find the small boats that they initally sailed to Liverpool in. Can anyone help me with this. It`s not really a prerequisite for my novel but would add to the realism.
    Thanks.

    Hello Elaine

Have a look at this page:

British & Irish Steam Packet Co. (B + I line)

The company was founded in 1836 by a group of Dublin businessmen and the site lists a number of their vessels. They sailed to southern English ports though rather than to Liverpool. A clue may be provided at the end of the page where the Liverpool line of Powell, Bacon and Hough are mentioned along with several other shipping lines that probably had boats running into Liverpool.

There are some Liverpool bound steamers mentioned in this Google books page The History of Steam Navigation by John Kennedy (1903)

Incidentally since you are writing a novel, you could make up a name just like you are making up the names of characters, right? But I agree that you should get as much information as you can on what those vessels were actually like.

Good luck to you in your enquiry.

My uncle has written a book about "The Tayleur" called "Iron Clipper" that sank off the coast of Dublin in 1853 en route to Australia. Don't know if that helps. Avid books - HF Starkey.
