    Default Police axe 08 leave

All holiday leave cancelled for June & July this year for the Police.

It's something that doesn't suprise me to be honest as there is so much going on. One good thing that's come out of it for the Police is that they won't get stung with overpriced holidays in the peak time period.

Why June and July? Is that when 08 is at its best? I thought it was an all year round affair!

Just seen it on the Echo website. Here it is:

MERSEYSIDE police leaders have cancelled all summer leave after accepting there will be no new army of officers for Capital of Culture year.

Chief constable Bernard Hogan-Howe will have to pull officers off existing duties to ensure the safety of spectators for the showcase year.

All leave has been cancelled for June and July as police try to spread their already-stretched numbers.

Since the city was awarded Capital of Culture the chief and his police authority chairman Cllr Bill Weightman have tried to win £10m from the government .

This was to pay for 200 extra officers which Mr Hogan-Howe said were essential for the smooth running and safety of the year.

    But Downing Street refused.

Among the main events the force must now police without any extra manpower are:

This weekend’s People’s Opening, which is expected to attract a crowd of up to 20,000.

June’s Anfield concert, for which 35,000 tickets have already been sold.

The Tall Ships visit for July’s Maritime Weekend, which hundreds of thousands of people are expected to attend.

The Mathew Street festival, with hundreds of thousands expected.

Instead police numbers will be upped by just 50 – the normal yearly intake.

Cllr Weightman said: “We still hope the local authorities, Liverpool in particular, will assist with the cost of policing 2008.

“But so far they have not come to the table with anything constructive.

“Liverpool obviously has its own money issues (with its own £20m Capital of Culture shortfall) before they can help us.

“We are already recruiting some new officers and they will eventually go into the neighbourhoods allowing more experienced officers to come out for the big events.

“I will be speaking to (home secretary) Jacqui Smith this week on this subject. She may have forgotten about it.

“But we have not and will continue to push our case.”

Merseyside police today declined to comment.

Liverpool council’s executive member for community safety Cllr Colin Eldridge today insisted it was still the government’s responsibility to fund extra police for 2008.

He said: “Their decision is an absolute disgrace considering they provided extra resources for the Commonwealth Games in Manchester and the G8 in Scotland.

    “Why is Liverpool being penalised?

“As for the council paying for policing, we would be in a much better position to consider helping if the government would let us borrow money to help fund Capital of Culture.

“Perhaps Cllr Weightman could assist us first by asking his government to help with that.”

Actually it's only July that leave's been cancelled, the Echo got it wrong by throwing June in there as well and riled a lot of people at work who thought otherwise and had holidays booked
