Thumbs up International Coverage of C of C

MEDIA from across the world are clamouring to cover Liverpool’s Capital of Culture year.

Tourism officials today said interest from international newspapers, magazines, TV and radio stations was at an all-time high.

The Mersey Partnership (TMP) handled visits by more 300 media representatives from more than 25 countries in 2007.

A further 100 reporters from Europe, north and south America, the far east and Australia have also visited the city and surrounding areas over the past 12 months.

They include Russia, Thailand, Canada, India, Greece, Malta and Japan.

Next month’s official opening of culture year has led to a new wave of interest.

A Culture Company spokesman said the People’s Opening on Friday January 11 featuring Ringo Starr would have live news coverage on major British TV and radio stations, with camera crews from America, France and Germany also due in the city.

TMP director of tourism Martin King said: “The interest in the destination has never been greater, and throughout 2007 we’ve welcomed national and international media from all over the world.

“It's proved the perfect springboard into 2008 when we will be centre of a world stage.

“No other destination in the world can offer what we can next year, and media interest reflects the interest in the destination among their readers, viewers and listeners.

“It's almost impossible to quantify the value of this type of coverage in terms of what we’d have to pay to secure the same profile through advertising.

“As we saw during the Open golf championship in Wirral in 2006 and we’ll see again at Royal Birkdale next July, the opportunities to showcase the destination are immense.”

I can confirm the truth of this: I took a French photographer who works for the gallic!equivalent of the Conde Nast travel magazine around the city and I know many of my guiding colleagues have done the same. I saw the finished article and it was very positive about Liverpool as a holiday venue. At one time, French magazines only mentioned us to talk about urban decay and hooliganism. I also took several French mayors and officials around the city who had come here to learn from our economic regeneration. Nice to be getting some good publicity!

Most people in the rest of the UK don't know about Capital of Culture, nor do they care.

Deprived of its unique dockland waters Liverpool
becomes a Venice without canals, just another city, no
longer of special interest to anyone, least of all the
tourist. Would we visit a modernised Venice of filled in
canals to view its modern museum describing
    how it once was?
