    Default Pavement Improvements

    Extra cash for city pavements

Oct 27 2007 by Nick Coligan, Liverpool Echo

MORE money has been found to extend a scheme to re-pave city centre streets.

Work is due to start on re-laying footpaths on Whitechapel, between Church Street and Sir Thomas Street, at the end of this month.

But additional cash has been provided by the European Regional Development Fund, Neptune Developments and Merseytravel to increase the amount of work carried out under the £350,000 scheme.

Pavements on the Queen Square side of Old Haymarket and Whitechapel, to the junction with Sir Thomas Street, will now be improved as well.

Work will start in the area outside Dr Duncan’s pub on Monday and continue until December, when it will be suspended to allow access to the Queen Square car park for Christmas shopping.

It will resume in January and be completed by the end of March.

The scheme is part of the £73m city centre movement strategy to improve roads and public areas.

I find that term 'city centre movement strategy' very amusing, given its virtually impossible to move round the city centre at the moment without facing obstruction somewhere.

As much as this is good news, what about the rest of the city. Huge parts of our city have truly shocking pavements and road surfaces. The difference between city centre pavements and pavements everwhere else is huge. I would like to see major investment in our streetscape outsite the centre, many areas need huge public realm improvements such as new lighting, paving, new road surfaces and a b###dy good clean.

Much of the pedestrian areas have tatty and stained pavements. They need to be pressure washed.
