Thread: Murder in Liverpool circa 1973 / 74

Default Murder in Liverpool circa 1973 / 74

I am not sure if I am posting this in the right section, but apologies if I havent.
Anyway what I am looking for is advice in researching a murder which took place in the Walton area of Liverpool about 1973/74, I recall a lad by the name of John noone or noonan was murdered and his body was found in stanley Park. John lived in City Road with his Grandma.

I suspect the echo archives may have reports of this, but how do I access their archives? and does anybody else know where I may find articles relating to this. Sorry to sound like a 'Numpty' but I am new to this research, but would really appreciate some guidance.

    Thanks

The Record Office on the 4th floor of the Central Library has all the local papers on microfilm.

Thanks.. thats a start, but as I am unaware of the date ie it was either 73 74 or 75 would I have to systematically work through all of the newspaers from this time in hope of finding a report, or is there a more systematic approach to finding this information?

Is there any way you can "search" on a paper? Or do you have to trawl through them all?

    There's no search facility, unfortunately.
It's exactly the same as reading the original paper.
Before you start looking through the papers, tell the staff what you're looking for - perhaps they have Court Records, or something similar.

They do keep files of pressclippings dedicated to the biggest stories, you have to go in to the archives section for that and get a readers ticket,so take some ID. Not sure if this would merit them having done that though.

Searching the weekly newspapers would be quicker - the Record Office has the Walton Times for 1972-76.

    Hiya Sheilsy ,

I don't know if this is the young lad or not , but it's worth starting your search here .

    John Anthony Noon , d o b . 10th July 1963.
    Death q 4 December 1975 Ref . 36 page 0813.
So he'd be 12 yrs old

So if you contact the Echo to see if they ran the story in Dec 1975,
Hope it's a starting point for you
    good luck
    Karen

I think the reason you aren't getting any where is the person you mention was not murdered in Stanley park but the murderer. i went to school with the guy nicknamed nooney. when the child in Stanley park was murdered we where shocked he was charged with the murder

yeah the kid was killed by a fella called Cooney who lived on Everton Valley I think his name was John, I remember it well, I was 9 at the time, the kid was dressed in fancy dress as an Indian and had been to a street party in City road and was returning back to anfield.
Cooney was given life but was released in the late 80s, which is a disgrace.

If you are going to the Picton Library, the echo records are on film and you need to book a reader machine. The staff will help you load the film up and then you can scan the echo archives. The times allowed are in 2 hour blocks that start 9am-11am, 11am - 1pm etc. You will probably want a printer attached so you can take a screen dump and you will need plenty of silver change as these machines swallow the money up so take a few quid. You also need to book them in advance and you need to ring 0151 233 5817. I'll be there on Monday if you have any questions you want me to ask.
