Default 6 Mere Lane a Hostel?

    Hello everyone

Would anyone be able to tell me whether No 6 Mere Lane, Liverpool was some kind of hostel? I've found a marriage that is connected to my ancestry (not direct line) that states 6 Mere Lane as one of the addresses, but since then I have found lots of people all living at 6 Mere Lane when they were married, especially
in the year 1893. OPC lists these and as I have no other reference to this address I am now wondering if
it was a hostel or maybe a boarding house of some kind.

    Thanks

Could 6 Mere Lane have been the old Harbreck House?

It seems to have had no family occupancy in the 1893 period you mention so might have been apartments/rentals/hostel at that time. The location seems correct. The building was bought by the Council in 1898 for a hospital office. It could have certainly housed a lot of families..

Anyone got a 1893 map of the area?

    MORE

This section from the link above -

Fullerton’s Plan of Liverpool and Birkenhead (1862) clearly shows the extent of
the property. It stretches in a triangular shape from Mere Lane to Beacon Lane.
The back of the property would have been where Breckfield Road would have
continued to Beacon Lane. The entrance to the grounds would have been where the
Mere Bank Public House is today.

    - would seem to match with where Google maps puts 6 Mere Road today...

That number 6 will have gone well before 1927 as it was a park back then and possibly before then?

Wonder why it was demolished if it was a big house?

This is where it would have stood and there is no other pics of this area to date.

    Hi all

    Thanks for your replies.

Had a look at the links, I don't think it was Harbreck house, although I don't know anything about this house, the link says this was at Fazakerley. I don't know what kind of a house 6 Mere Lane was either just
trying to see what information is available on this address to see if I can find out why my person was there.

    Replies much appreciated thank you
    Maggie

Mere Bank House (Pub) - yes - and that is across from the church that the link says the main entrance was opposite.

It's the funny shaped corner building on the Google map link earlier.

Thanks George, yes I was just about to say that starting at the Town Hall end of the street, No.6 would have been near the top.

Cannot understand why those ones on Mere Lane got demolished, considering that adjoining streets were left standing and habitable.
Those houses where quite sturdy and better built as they were the posher houses as opposed to the workingmans house in the same area.

    Good Morning everyone

Thanks guys, great pictures, - so I'm looking at the top end of the street then. Okay thanks. Now I have
to puzzle out why this is the only reference to this address we have.

    Thanks again everyone

But Google seems to put a moderm #6 at the bottom end.

Did the numbering system change over the years?

And what town hall when the street was first numbered?

It doesn't,Az....the link you posted has no6 at the top end of Mere Lane ie opposite the Mere Bank pub.

Strange... when I click on it - and when I made the link - the Google marker is at the left end of Mere Lane and just before the big white building on the top side of Mere Lane. It is only 100 ft along Mere lane from the triangular pub.

Does the UK Google maps react differently?

The text description, as I read it, seems to imply the house was at the Pub end of the street...
