Hiya Norm. The old Radium Institute is now demolished and awaiting final amendments to Planning approval for new Apartments...apparently the existing trees will require pruning and thats causing a problem in gaining approval.....at present its a car park.

Thanks CP, & wsteve55, Josaphine Butler House was the 'front' office block/reception rooms, main hospital building of six floors was directly behind. also university Medical Endocrine Labs was situated in basement of main building.

i believe it was a forerunner to Clatterbridge in cancer care & research..... howeveri am sure Norm is more able to qualify this.

nice collection there Leon.......thanks for kindly sharing them......as they say " Another One Bites The Dust "......what an absolute disgrace ....another case of Profit or Greed taking precedence over preservation of the city's heritage. ......The Seaman's Orphanage buildings in Newsham Park are the latest ones at risk ....they are in an awful interior condition and getting worse.

Thanks! Leon and Les! Great pics! Guess my old job is gone forever!!!! I used to park my old 1948 Standard 8 in that carpark when at work. The hospital building was in need of modernisation, but pity the 'Josaphine House' part was destroyed! Clatterbridge Hosp was also doing Cancer research, Les, and the Radio Isotope Bank was there! one of my jobs was to convey radio-active material to and from there to the Institute. research was fairly basic in those days, and included the University Endocrine Labs, (Glandular research), and the Institute carried out Radio-Therapy treatments on various cancers. Hospital also included a number of large houses both in Hope Street and Rodney Street. Often wonder what happend to those beautiful houses!!!

    Hi Norm,
My mother worked briefly,in that building, but gave it up when a "bag" she was disposing of,burst open to reveal what she thought, were bloodied human bit's!? Would that have been a possibility?

Great set of Pic's there Leon!

Quite possible wsteve55, Radio active implants were inserted in certain cancers, and some 'small' leisions could have been removed, these were disposed of in the incinerator at the rear of the hospital building, and this incinerator had to be 'checked out' for radio activity occasionally.
