It definately used to be there. You could see it from the train just before the tunnels at Leeds Street.

Also on the Wigan to Manchester Line there is also a disused Station and also i see one on the way into MAN PIC but dont know the names thogh.
Ditton does seem to be overlooked, perhaps because people think station closures ended after Beeching's axe. That disused stations site was great though!

Incidentally, how about stations almost not in use,aka request stops. There are a few on the mid-wirral line that only get guaranteed stops in peak hours. The E. Port-Bank Quay* service only runs at peak hours too,and how nice it would be to be a station-master on the stops east to Helsby.

Default Liverpool Underground Question (ghost stories etc)

    Hey guys

I'm currently writing a horror serial set in contemporary Liverpool and I'd love to set some of it under the city. I'm researching the Williamson Tunnels, gonna go take a look next week, but I was wondering whether anyone has any links or stories about the underground - specifically, are there tunnels down there that don't get used anymore, where do they go, are there any ghost stories people know of set down there? Any help, signposting etc would be very gratefully received!!

    Cheers

Do we use the word 'gotten' now. Oh no, I tell the Americans every day there is no such word

    Thats going wayyyyy back!

One of the Yesterday's of Wirral books has a image of it. But it was only a request stop for golfers. They closed it due to the amount of times it needed to be uncovered due to sand-drifting.

Its a shame Birkenhead Woodside was demolished. We could have had our own G-Mex overlooking the River!

Gotten of course is in use in American English. It's just one of the words we used to use in England that got lost in time but was retained in the US. Pocketbook and turnpike come to mind as others but there are many more.

I never saw Birkenhead Woodside for myself (a tad too young), but from the pictures I've seen, it was an architectural masterpiece! The station was huge, considering there were just 5 platforms.
It was a shame that it was built 'the wrong way round', with the beautiful Victorian portico, facing Cammell Lairds shipyard & not the Ferry Terminus, as was originally intended. Passengers never getting to see the huge stone fireplaces or massive timber roof trusses, that were meant to have been the booking office & waiting rooms. Instead they were only ever used for storing mail & suchlike.
Marcus Binney wrote in his 'Save Britain's Heritage' book, that it was "a station of truly baronial proportions & worthy of any London Terminus". A complete travesty that the building was demolished, like so many others (Birmingham Snow Hill, Liverpool Central High Level, Bradford Exchange, etc)...
If anyone has photos of Birkenhead Woodside (& not copied from the Subrit site) before, after closure & during demolition, they'd be great to see...!

Some Birkenhead Woodside photos attached, courtesy of National Railway Museum & Merseyside Railway History Group.

I can remember taking the train from Woodside to Plymouth in 1966. I think it closed the following year.

Wow. I knew it was a station, but never knew it was so impressive.

Shame they go rid of so many excellent station buildings.

Was looking for a photo of the old Waterloo station (before they destroyed it with them horrible shelters), but can't find one. While I was looking, found this for sale on Ebay

I used to use that station most days. I know the station is still in use now but ya can see how much the soul has been ripped out of it. Sorry couldn't find a good current photo of it
